Teasing ZED - vintage Casio content
on: July 03, 2013, 10:04:09 AM
Since ZED got bitten by the G-Shock bug again (which is Kirks fault alone and has nothing to do with me trading him 2 square ones) he is lusting after a vintage DW-5600 C.

I was mentioning I was collecting parts to restore one and since then he is pestering me with offers of things he would trade me for it....  :D

As i am more the tinker/restorer i have no problem to let a watch go once it´s done, so we agreed on a trade.

And to tease ZED a bit and either shorten the wait or increase his pain I thought I´d share a few pics and tell you about teh restoration process.

I want to restore it together with a "Brother from a different mother" a Citizen shock resist Digital watch from about teh same time.

Here they are:

The Bezel of the DW-5600 degraded years ago. I´m waiting on an aftermarket bezel and strap set from Brazil and a set of screws from a Casio parts dealer in the US.

After some penetrating oil and with quite some force i was able to undo teh screwback.

I´m still torn between repolishing the caseback and leaving the marks and scars of it´s 30 years intact.

The buttons still show their gold coloured plating and seem to be straight - We´ll see when I pull them out.

Like it, Zed?

I´m not making teh rules, but it´s fine with me if you post old Casios here. Nice one!
Did you choose teh Nylon strap or is it just because you don´t have a Resin strap anymore?

This one never had a full resin band, the original band was a mix of grey resin and stainless. I still have it but I don't have any links to make it bigger. The woven band was an impulse buy because the Grey matched. Too bad the band is way too short to even get the first hole around my wrist.

Actually i got a bit of luck - The screen looked  a bit scratched in the advert, but it showed to be only years old dirt.

I unwrapped the strap and bezel yesterday, but I left the module inside for the moment. When I find an hour I want to remove the buttons to clean the stems and lube the seals, so I´ll do some module pics then. Afterwards she´ll be fitted with a new seal.

Still undecided if to polish the Screwback or let it show it´s life - any ideas, Zed?

Back from the Honeymoon and back in Action.

I´ve got al parts together.

New Bezel screws - Check
New base gasket - Check
New Resin strap and bezel - Check
New battery - Check
Clasp for the strap - Check

A teaser pic is attached.

Now if I could only remember where the smurf i did put the small Ziploc bag before I went on my Honeymoon... I think i left it in the shop where i took the case to polish it up.

As soon as i find it, I´ll lube and reassemble the watch!

I could slap myself...
I have yet to find that smurfing bag! In my despair i already bid on anothe old Casio (with cracked crystal) to harvest teh buttons from.

I can´t even blame Kirk. I was just quickly cleaning up my desk when we went on our Honeymoon and must have misplaced the parts.

I´m angry with myself - I usually put stuff and tools back where they belong. And once I don´t and - Gone.
 :ahhh

I´ll have a close look at possible places tonight. Good side is that my desktop gets a torogh once over this way.

Thanks for having patience, Zed.

:tu: Found it! It was not far. It was tucked away safely in teh box where teh DW-6900 spares belong.
I found it by sifting through teh parts and projects boxes one by one.
I´ll have a :drink: on me tonight.

I got it back together!

Here are the pesky little buttons that played hide and seek:

I started easy by putting the original Casio clasp (unfortunately a SS version, not a gold coloured one) onto the brazilian aftermarket strap.

Then I lubed the O rings on the button stems and reinstalled the buttons with the small e-clips -They are also known as Jeeeesuuus clips as this is what it sounds like when one jumps from the tweezers, propelled into oblivion.

One through a magnifier.

Don´t drink more than one Coffee before fitting those.

Funny enough, since I have a few spare ones, they jump less often.

After the buttons were fixed, I cleaned the contact area for the Piezo speaker with a Glassfiber brush.

As I want this watch to be wearable I decided to install a crystal protection cover, made out of a cover for a small handheld - those films are big enough to fit most any watch crystal.

The crystal is exceptionally well preserved for a G-Shock of this age.

...and it shall stay that way!

As one of the screws had been broken inside the thread, I decided to glue a shortened screw out of the parts box into the bezel opening.
The bezel is held sufficiently with the 3 other screws. In the 4th corner i fixated it with a drop of Cyanoacrylate glue. Can be removed and will not harm the case.

Then the watch got it´s new clothes.

Afterwards it was a quick cleaning of the inside of the Case and putting the module and shock absorber back in.

Closed it up with a new, lubed seal and put the strap on.

Voila:

Pictured together with it´s great-grandkid, the GWM-5600, one of teh latest, atomic solar incarnations of the Classic G-Shock

So, Zed, if you like what you see, gimme a shout!  :D
