Got my spirit today...
on: May 02, 2008, 03:10:27 AM
Just a few concerns:

-It's loose. It's supposed to be brand new, but unlike all my LM's, it's ply isn't tight like LM's.
-It came with fingerprints all on it.
-Looked like it had been dipped in machine oil.
-No straight blade. But oh well. My dumb fault for not researching haha.

Should I be concerned?

I would say no. The Swisstools don't loosen up with use as LMs do. It will stay at the level it is at. I wouldn't worry about it... Many people have made the combo edge a straight edge.

they do take and show finger prints more than a leatherman but they also wipe down very nice, I hope you like it.

hmm...how loose is loose?  Like if you hold one handle and shake the tool, does it flop around?

The few Vic tools I've gotten new had a thin coating of yellowish oil on some parts, so I woulden't worry about that.

One telltale sign of if a tool was used is look at the tip of the Phillips driver...is it nicked?  Is there anything in the saw teeth?  Anything in the file teeth?  Is there any gunk in the tiny ridges on the plier jaws?

After a quick inspection, I have to answer no to all your speculations, Corrugated. It's pristine.

Then, it was sealed so even though it wasn't used, it couldn't of been!

Loose? Darn, that sucks, my spirit is snappy like you wouldn't believe and it was used when I got it. Fingerprints are another weird one, maybe it was a display model of some kind and got resealed?

Clam packs are those clear plastic cases that are molded or glued shut and people have a hard time opening because they don't own a Leatherman pruner tool.

I agree with Mike, if it's the handles, send it back as they should snap open.  A small amount of play on the plier head is not unheard of though.
I'm back!!

Mine came loose too - here's a video I took of it today, showing the side-to-side movement. Will send it back soon to Victorinox.

Good video! I was trying to come up with one, but i don't have a vice, glad some one thinks like me, means i'm not crazy, although i have used a lot of commas, is that a sign of madness??

I don't think it's a problem, even my swisstool has a little play in it, and that can still cut wire perfectly :)

:) Thought that would be the easiest way to show the side to side play of the head, and if it's the same as the play in E.Danny's Spirit.

Wow, that is quite a bit of play. Even my most clapped out tool just barely approaches that much side-to-side movement.

What year is the tool? Couldn't tell from the video.

Whoa. That's WAY too much play for a Spirit, in my opinion. :(
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I got two '98 SwissTool's from another forum member and one of the tools has side to side movement. Not as bad as E.Danny's but its still something to take note of. Like, when the tool is closed the handles move slightly. It's not THAT bad but I think I may send it in for warranty. Has anyone used the Vic warranty in the USA?

What do you mean? I sort of fixed the problem.. I cut pennies and nickels and it seemed to stop the side movement.. Maybe because the wire cutters are closer together now?

My Spirit is not even a month old, and it's the latest version. Needless to say, she'll be getting booked in soon. Think mine was made in Switzerchina... ;)

I take it mine is worse than yours then E.Danny?
