Wenger Soldat 1925
on: August 04, 2013, 01:58:04 PM
Couple months ago I bought Wenger Soldat made in 1925.
The overall condition was not bad, all the tools was good, no broken springs, but the scales was bent and damaged around pins.
I contacted Wenger and asked them if they could put new set of scales, and they confirmed that the knife is original but that they can not fix it because they haven't got any of that kind of scales left.

I considered leaving the knife as is, but that would just annoy me.
So I decided to send it to my friend who forges knives and make his own knife designs and scales.
I decided to leave bolsters and tools unpolished, to show sak's age and for the scales he used Wenge wood.
I received the Soldat yesterday, and this is how it looks now:

Nice Job makes it a useable knife :)

Quite a rare year but not so rare as to be considered sacrilege :)

Could we get a photo to see what he has done with the liners ?

I am guessing it was scales off and then cut and hammer the pins then apoxy the scales .

Posted it many times but my 38 wenger with replacement pins and all the tools ground back

Never gets used these days but my knifes that have been repaired like yours get used daily :)

Well done!  :salute: :salute: I love that look where the old age shows on the tools but the broken and bent scales are removed and replaced. Like you said it shows her age but the scales make her look beautiful!  :tu: :tu:

You are correct Jaydar, old scales was removed and pins were cut off and than the new scales was epoxied.
Unfortunately, no pics were taken during this process.
I know that when the scales was removed, it was relatively easy to polish bolsters and tools, and to make them all new and shiny, but it was my intent to preserve some of the knife identity and to show scuffs and marks and all the years (88) that this Wenger has.
I'm not going to use it anyway, and I think that this restoration brings a new life to this beauty.
