What is your preferred carry aid for 93mm alox SAKs?
on: August 15, 2013, 04:36:12 PM
Hello guys and gals.  I've done mods where people love or hate the keyring on alox 93s, love or hate pocket clips, some want no clip or keyring, and some want both.   So what Id like to figure out is what is the most common carry aid combination or lack of carry aid people want.

What I'm trying to do is pre-mod a bunch of 93s to list on EDCsource, and I would tend to want to configure them the way that would be most popular.  If only 10% of people like pocket clips I wouldnt put them on as the default configuration, but as an option.

I dont really have a good guess on this one, so Im curious to see people's preferences, and thank you very much for participating, it's appreciated!

Cheers,
Robert

I have a clip on my farmer and that's pushing it with three layers, and I use the keyring always on the cadet, which it's totally fine, I know it's smaller but if it was longer I don't think it would be any problem, now if your making your custom 93 four layer, the keychain will be great, but the pocket clip might just be a little to thick, tuff call, JR

I'm liking my Alox like this as well recently...even though I do like a lanyard ::)

Both original key ring, and a removable pocket-clip will be nice.  :D
If the clip is not removable, then just the original configuration.

Bail! :D

I havent figured out how to do that with torx screws yet.  Although I think a bail might clip on if I used the larger T9 head size.  However the action of moving the bail would probably then round the inside of the screw... so Im not too sure.  :D

Looks like keyring and a pocket clip is winning up to now...I think both is overkill ::)
With a keyring you could have it on a dangler like the TEC P-7 so no need for the clip as well ;)
I think a clip would did in the hand more than a keyring making it uncomfortable to use :(

+1 for the bail - my ideal alox would be an SI with scissors, mag and phillips. How easy is it to source the hollow rivet?

My SI is the most comfortable to handle and although I love my Farmer it isn't nearly as good in the hand....

Another vote for nothing at all. My favorite models are the Wenger SI (bail removed :P ), Electrician, Solo and I prefer the Harvester over the Farmer (don't tell Mike ). I know pocket clips are supposed to be one of the best inventions on modern knives, but I'm perfectly happy without them. :P

Nothing for me: no key ring, no clip, no bail.

Hollow rivet (to hold bail or string) is fine and personally I wish that all 93 mm alox SAKs with key ring had the hollow rivet instead, with or without bail.

I usually just carry my Pioneer in my pocket along with my keys.  I hate clips as I once lost a very nice knife while using the clip  >:(

We here must be an exception. People usually rave about pocketclips on SAKs. :)

Okay, now for a real option, I'd say only keyring. On a SAK, I don't really see the use of a pocketclip, certainly when it's more than two layers thick.
I am close to water often, so I do like the possibility of attaching a lanyard. Would like it more if it was something attachable or foldable, though.

Thanks very much guys, thats good info.  I for sure wont have a pocket clip as a standard configuration then, and leave that as an addon option.

My personal preference is both, but that is because I like the SAK attached to my belt by a long chain so it is never lost, but held vertical in my pocket by clipping the clip on pocket.  A pocket clip with a lanyard attachment hole would accomplish the same though.

Currently on my EDC knife I prefer no keyring/clip on standard Vic knives (not many available with pocket clips).

I'm shocked by the poll results so far though, most people I talked to want the keyring.

I do like Syph007's pocket clip, it's the only Alox SAK clip I've really liked.   If I'm slipping an extra knife in a cargo pocket, a pack, or some MaxPedition organizer, the pocket clip is really nice to have to keep it in place and accessible.

I use the Tec P-7 clip on all my SAKs even a Huntsman carries well hanging down inside the pocket.

I can take or leave the keyring on most SAKs, as I generally don't use the keyring but don't feel it is really in the way.  On 93mm alox, however, I can't stand the keyring, as it just seems to hit my palm in an uncomfortable spot when I'm using the knife.  So, all of my 93mm alox users are models without the keyring.

It's so true I don't know how regular Farmers can be so popular when using the saw can be so painful.  The good thing though is the keyring attachments can be cut like butter with good snips and then grinding or filing them a bit is a breeze.  A dremel c/o wheel works good too.  On the 91mm where the attachment is part of the spring I imagine it's a good deal more difficult, I've never tried to cut one of those off.  They have a different angle to them and don't get in the way as much.  I think I'll try it one day on an old knife.  I don't want to ruin a good pair of cutters though, so maybe I'll try first with a cut-off wheel.

I usually carry my Farmer in my pocket, but I did add a carabiner on the keyring, so my answer would be the keyring  :)

So true - I really don't know why the hollow rivet and bail aren't standard issue on all Alox - then you have the choice of whether to make use of the bail or not and it's very comfortable to use.

Keyring, and carried via a dangler/lanyard.

My custom alox SAKs are much too valuable to risk them falling out of my pocket and getting lost.
