Bone as a scale/ handle material?

Following a recent discussion with Roadie in another thread, it became very clear that we had very different thoughts with regards to bone as a handle or scale material.  I was very keen on it and he didn't like it at all, so now I am interested to know everyone else thinks?

I like bone. It is allways warm to the hand and actually gives a fantastic grip. Plus by voting that way I cancelled out Roadie :0

I voted yes, but truth be told I do have very mixed feelings about it, not least of which was my being a veggie until very recently

It does look very good indeed, but it's got a lot of issues, like flaking, rotting and being damned uncomfortable if not done correctly.

I agree with Micky... I would rather have FRN or other materials like Kraton because one it is more comfortable and you don't experience the rotting, flaking, and the uncomfortable handles..  A prime example would be the Gerber Gator. It has the Gator handles that are basically impervious to the elements and it is extremely comfortable.

I voted yes, because of the beauty and feel of it.  I don't, however, think it is the most reliable handle material, and there are better choices due to its tendency for breakage.

For a user, I would rather have micarta.

Old stable bone is pretty good , a lot of bone ya find on modern pocket knives is not of former quality . Generally I stay away from it .

Lets not forget what can happen to natural materials down the line- they require more care than synthetic materials, although I will admit they look nicer.  I just think for a user knife that may not always get the kind of care it deserves, I'd prefer something a little sturdier.

Personally, my favorites would probalby be solid metal (engraved is nice), micarta, and wood.

I kinda like the looks of bone/stag, but I voted no. First, though this might sound silly, having part of a dead animal in my pocket seems less than grand. Second, they take more upkeap. There's part of me that really like the "old-fashioned" part of them, but AFAIK, people have been using synthetic materials for knife handles since as soon as they existed (celluloid), so I don't feel like it's just a new-fangled idea or something to use plastics either.
