This is the difference between "custom" and mass produced I guess...

Prometheus Alpha Ready (semi custom) and Olight M21.  Both run on 18650 rechargeables.  The Olight says "500 Lumens"  The Prometheus says "400 lumens"

Last night, the pungent odor d' skunk awoke us to the fact that a striped friend was near. I grabbed the new-to-me Prometheus Alpha Ready and my Olight M21. Let's just say the difference was "night and day".

The Olight had a bright spot and then some level of spill but the Prometheus had a broad bright beam, which has no bright spot and just a tiny amount of spill around the main beam arc.  I would estimate that the Prometheus arc of bright light was close to 40 degrees, while the bright spot of the Olight was maybe 10 or 15 degrees with the spill going out to maybe the same 40 degree arc.

The Prometheus is about twice the cost of the Olight, but the beam was absolutely in a different league.

Well you know you'll have to post some beamshots now when the night comes. ;)

Most of my flashlights are floody but I've been meaning to get a decent thrower for those few occasions when I need it.

My beam shots always suck.  :(

Any tips for getting those really defined beam shot photos?

That could be a light sabre.

I think they use a mounted camera and mounted flashlight for those nice round circles bouncing off a white wall. I meant real life beamshots, illuminating an area first with one and then the other though.

The other difference is, when your mass produced one goes pop/walks replacement parts are easily obtainable.
The Leatherman crunch.  One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass consumption. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Not always. With a light is a couple of years old it's seen as dated and the far east manufactures won't support it in any spares etc.

Whereas a custom maker like Prometheus, you can return the light and it would be repaired, maybe even upgraded to the latest LED at the same time.
