The SwissTool claims it can cut 40 HRc wire. What does it stand for? I was thinking hard resistance core but I am not sure.

The C-scale, for harder materials, uses a diamond cone, known as a Brale indenter and a 150-kg weight to obtain a value expressed as "HRC".

We've got a Wilson tester where I work for checking hardness. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow.

Hardness testers are awesome machines! Got to use one last year as part of one of my modules, great fun!

Are you sure it's not a number used in the San Fernando Valley?

But seriously though, lower numbers are softer, higher is harder. It's common these days for knives to be around 60 HRc and some very expensive high carbon ones can get to 66 or more. I could be wrong, but I think I remember that diamonds are 100.

Hi,

HRC stands for "Hardness, Rockwell C (scale)".  This is a measure of the strength and abrasion resistance of metals.
