Looking for a hunting satchel
on: September 07, 2013, 02:56:35 PM
Im looking for a satchel to carry over my shoulder in addition to my backpack when Im out hunting. It needs to have space for a small pair of binoculars, a compass, a gps and few shotgun shells and not much more.
I have an Idea of what I want, but would like to get some input from you guys. You might just  come up with something better, that I havent thought about. :)

Havent really decided yet. I like both as long as its not too tactical, if that makes sence.

There pricey but I think there perhaps the best of both worlds in the they are fairly tacticool, but still look like a traditional hunting bag :)

Or you could go to the other end of the scale and have a look at medieval script bags, like the ones at the bottom of this page: http://www.philfraser.com/pouchesbags.htm

Just go to any surplus store and look at their stuff. I carry one hunting as well for putting small game in and also have one as part of my bug out kit loaded with spare MREs.

Example of diff. mil spec bags here: http://www.fatiguesarmynavy.com/store/dept/2/Duffle___Gear__Bags

How about a Maxpedition Versipack?  It's like a dropleg bag, but also could be carried like a shoulder bag.
Maybe a little 'tactical' look, but at least it is not black only. :)

Thanks guys!
The maxpeditions and the script bags both look interesting.  Perhaps a combination? A scriptlike bag, in witch I can put in some velcro strips and make individual cambers, like in a camerabag?

As for for surplus stores, they ususally dont have that kind of gear here, but Ill take a look the next time I see one.

There are only about a billion options. :)

I'm partial to my MaxPed Jumbo for that- I don't think it's very tactical. But even an old purse that doesn't make you feel unmanly would work for this role. Although I"d advise nothing with rhinestones or sparkles, that might spook the birds.  :D

Smurf! I have already ordered this one, as it matches perfectly with my hunting jacket.

Heres the satchel I ended up with. I got it for a few bucks on ebay.
I put in a couple of velcro stripes, so I can split the comaprtment in whatever way I need.
Only problem is that it was definitly a womans purse in its previous life. It reeks of perfume. Any ideas of how I can make the smell go away?

I used to put activated charcoal to deodorize newly furnished apartment, don't know will that work for the leather.  Sometimes a little sunshine and airing it out does help with leather products.

I did a quick search on google by 'deodorize leather' and many interesting results shown up.(too many to list here)  ;)

Looks good.

Yeah, descenting leather is a pain. I've had some luck by putting a pair of oder eaters into a ziplock bag, along with the leather, and putting it in a cool, dry, dark place for a few days. But only some.
