Sometimes junk from ebay ends up being a Gem!
on: September 19, 2013, 08:54:58 PM
Ok,

first, I know there are many levels of collectors here, and  I forwarn you that this is no miracle find like a Tiffany or super rare item , however to me, it is wonderful.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

so my latest ebay purchase was 3 SAKs  an Ambassador, a Super Tinker and an Explorer.

all three were pretty clean and snap as they should  :tu:

the Ambassador is what it is, nice but nothing special

The super Tinker has no hook (pre-1991) and the corkscrew is 3/4 flutted.  the last turn has no flutting.
I have noticed the last half a turn not having it, but this one is a full turn.

but my gem out of this $18 total price including shipping was the explorer.

the Corkscrew is flutted, the reamer has no eye, the scissors has a screw, the cap lifter does not lock at 90 degrees,  the *EDIT* Can Opener is the late 70s early 80s model with a nail nick that is noticable larger than my newer knives.
the Victorinox logo has the gold tint to it found in the pre 80's.
but my favorite item dating wise is the aluminum headed tweezers!  this is my first pair, and I have to admit, there is some scale surface scratches, but this knife seems like a knife from 8 years ago,  everything seems new and fluid, no cleaning required.    :climber:

I agree, I am very happy with my score and was pleasantly surprised.  I think it is a testament of the quality that this knife is older than I am, and it has aged better!

Ok so I grabbed another lot of SAKs from eBay.   4 knives $18 total with shipping.   Listed in the title as wenger, but 3 were vics.  Some sellers do not show all blades,   which is good for me.

I bought this lot for the troubleshooter , quick is fairly clean but had a chipped scale b [Marlboro troubleshooter]  I ordered some black plus scales for it.   However the pliers were twisted by about  .5mm. Pic below  Any advice on correcting this?

But what looked like aSuper Tinker turned out to be a salesman,  what looked like a tinker turned out to be a hiker that the seller did not open the saw.

I am not a huge fan of Wenger, but the Wenger [ large blade, nail file, scissors,  can opener,  cap life, corkscrew,  awl, no sign of tweezers or tooth pick] is in good shape.   The three Vics are dirty, but I can fix that.   All in all I feel I made out pretty good

Sounds like a good haul overall, especially for $18 total.  Wish I could help you with the plier issue :-[

Not a big deal,  I was going to put it in a vice and fix it myself,  but thought I should ask her first.
Since that is the only issue,  I cannot complain.

I am just excited to have a super tinker and a salesman now.   I present mini-me!! :))

My super deal on a troubleshooter is looking even better now that it has a new suit!

OK,  So I really liked the abused Marlboro troubleshooter that I essentially stole from ebay.  a few hours cleaning and oiling and it was kind of like new.

Now, that I have put some new Black Plus scales on it and loaded up the extras like the straight pin and Ink pen,  it is a slick little SAK.  I really like the tool load this has, and I know this will get carried a lot!  :climber:

well, I have one camo, one Sapphire, and several red, so I wanted to try something different.
It had busted Marlboro scales, so it needed something, and the plus scales just push the tool set up a little more.
I love my Camo, but it is my McKinley, so I do not carry it.  I guess you could call it my shelf queen, may not be worth much, but I am proud of it.

A little different, a Climber I got off of ebay (no hook, no reamer eye, flutted corkscrew) was a nice knife, but now with the new black plus scales from Syph, it looks very nice!!

I now have a Climber Plus.

I wanted to do my explorer, but being as it was from the mid-seventies, I could not bring myself to do it.

I enjoy Victorinox SAKs over Wenger,  however this was just $12  and looks like new in the pictures

several people posted pictures of these yellow scaled beauties and it sure looks nice.

I bought a 14 SAK lot off of ebay for $50 shipped, and am very happy with the outcome.

OK, so the lot I bought was mostly smalls

but the bail caught my eye!  as did the Big Wenger and the Electronic screen.

The Electronic Screen SAK worked!!  (It was sold without the battery or the door)
Turned out to be an Altimeter.  (Ordered Battery Door from eBay for $2.50)

The Big Wenger is dirty, but I will work on that, it turned out to be a Monarch from Circa 1971

The 84mm Vic with a Bail seemed like a Lumberjack, but instead of a Combo tool, it had a small clip point blade and was identified by Jazzbass.

That knife is technically called a "240 kU". Most people (myself included) call it a Lumberjack because that's it most resembles, although if you want to be technical the Lumberjack has a combo tool and not the pen blade. This was made before most knives were named and simply sold by its model number.

Date? I'd say mid 1960s, lets say c. 1964-1965.

the executive is the one with Large serrations on the Orange Peeler, but the scales have some pretty major heat damage.   A good carry SAK though.

the keychain SAKs are in a mix of conditions, and one has a RED LED light that does work.  the green scaled one will loose the scales if I sneeze, and the blue one with a logo is US Air Force.

To me,  I made out great!  some other collectors may not feel that way, but I love my first Bail'd SAK, and the large Wenger is awesome (once i clean it real good), and this is my first Electronic SAK
