Corrosion Resistance?
on: May 09, 2008, 02:22:58 PM
So how important is rust resistance too you in an MT/Sak ???

I can honestly say I'm not too bothered about a bit of surface rust on my fixed blade's, but it's a completely different story for me when it comes to pocket knives, Sak's and MT ::), I HATE it when I find any kind of rust on those, especially given all the nooks and cranies for corrosion to hide in :(

What about you guy's ???

I voted "Not really too concerned either way" it's nice if a tool doesn't rust, but i don't mind taking care of my tools so even if rust does occur i just clean it off and get on with it! :)

Don't get me wrong I look after my tools, but some seem determined to rust regardless what you do (you know who you are!)

Didn't mean it to sound like that :) It's more i actually enjoy looking after them, cleaning them etc, its quite relaxing :)

And some do seem a lot more rust prone than others, even from the same brand ::)

Thats ok I didn't take it as a slight, and yeah like you I do enjoy cleaning and maintaining them, but it is disheartening to have to clean rust off your micra only 3 days since the last time you did it :(

Never had a problem with my Micra, but it doesn't get used much so there's no sweat involved. Does live in a warm dry place though (on top of one of my computers :D )

Gilingham must be very damp  :D.  I got mine with no rust on and I still don't have any on there.

Doesn't matter to me

Sometimes I prefer different finishes if I know I'll be around a lot of water but by and large it makes no difference to me so long as it works.

I recently purchased a LM Fuse for work and have noticed that there are some small sign of surface rust this is to expected as i sits on my duty belt and I can be out in all weathers but it is a pest as I have enough to do without having to remember to clean my multi tool

I hate the stuff and it looks like the tools uncared for with rust on it .On the other hand I really enjoy cleaning and oiling them . Despite where I live rust is never a problem mainly because my Victorinox's see all the use and my other brands dont go too near the salty stuff .Most of my multitools are handled daily so rust doesnt get a chance  ;) I'm onto it before it even starts  >:D

A little corrosion doesn't bother me. I do notice that some tools get "freckles" easier than others. Those with a matte bead-blast finish seem to rust at the drop of a hat.  :-\
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

On my work tools a little rust is OK,and they are all well oiled and cared for,but on my MT's,I want SS or super steal,and/or Titanium handles.

Doesn't botther me one way or the other. Stainlessness (?) is a trade-off, so I see benefits in most kinds of steel.
