So how do you carry your smartphone?
on: October 08, 2013, 02:13:44 AM
After changing my phone after i dont know how many years of owning the same, raised me the question on how to carry that big thing. My previous phone was a flip style and small so it went well everywhere and scratches werent a problem.

Now i have an xperia acro s on the way which is a medium to big smartphone and im wondering how to carry it.

i do a lot of different things during the day so im always on the move, including riding a motorcycle everyday and i need to have my phone securely attached somewhere but i need to be able to access it fast if im on working hours (which is almost all day  :P)

So are there any good clip type sheaths? by good i mean secure and well made, or something to put the phone in and then in your pocket? other alternatives?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I am on my second iPhone and have always carried them in an Otterbox Defender case. Great protection and comes with a belt clip carrier where the phone snaps right in securely. Allows for horizontal or vertical carry on the belt too.

I grip mine in my teeth while shutting one eye and making pirate noises  :P

But aside from that  ;) it's just regular pocket carry - everything goes in my pockets as sheath carry causes snagging risks for me

For me, it's still pocket carry. Even after multiple cracked displays :D

That defender case seems like something really good but unfortunately its not available for my phone

I considered the pocket carry option but im afraid of squeezing and scratching my phone to dead, maybe its just me.

I saw one of those folding leather cases, some are vertical opening some horizontal, anyone tried those for pocket carry?

I use a leather case/sheath. The phone slips in and you pull on a cord if you want the phone to come out.
The phone is protected from any drops, when in the case, and the camera and screen do not get scratched.
I would not like any case that did not protect the camera lens and the screen.

Ditto on the Otter Box for the iPhone.   For the motorcycle I used a handle bar mount made by Ram,  that way I could use the GPS on my phone.

If I'm wearing cargo pants I'll put it in one of the side pockets. If wearing jeans I'll carry it my my Dewalt holster.

I have carried my other phones in an Otterbox Defender case with belt clip, and it is a good secure way to carry.

I should add I do use a lightweight sheath for my phone as well to protect it from keys and coins ..... or teeth  ;) :D :D

I have two phones - my work one is pretty tough by itself so I carry it naked but my home phone is less so. Historically I always carried it in a homemade pouch - if you cut out some margarine tub lids to just larger than the phone, put gaffer tape on both sides and build it in to a 5 sided box with an opening to slide it in and out of it works really well.

Unfortunately that bit the dust when the phone wasn't in it and I haven't got round to replacing it. My phone is currently protected by an old sock.

If the phone is so smart, why do you have to carry it? Can't he walk?...

My choice of smartphone carry...

Hazard4 i-Wallet

It's a combined wallet and a smartphone pouch, works perfectly for me :)

after several cracked iphone screens I got an otter box case as well. so far I dropped it 2 times and it has survived.  I do use the iphone belt clip from time to time and it is quite nice and holds the phone rather well.  I mostly slip it into my shirt pocket or while at work into a CLC sheath and attach to my work belt. the otter box and phone fit perfect and while its not the smallest sheath its been very handy, I added the snap for extra security while on my work belt.

I use a Defender series Otterbox or the Armor series Otterbox and I stick to pocket carry. I have broken too many clips on the Defender  series cases to trust them.

Mmmmm, so many choices, yes if i would go for something with a clip it has to be stainless at least. Also that mil wallet looks really nice, wonder if having your phone and wallet mixed is a good idea or not, might be worth a try.

I tend to avoid the pocket carry idea because i do lots of different activities and usually my pockets are full of garbage so hunting for the phone around those things wont be pretty in a hurry and i would be afraid of squeeze it too much when sitting on the floor or doing other non common things  :P

I would love to find something very sturdy like the otter box case so the phone could probably travel anywhere unharmed but havent had any luck yet.

Thanks for the suggestions so far  :tu:

How about a customized leather pouch with loops to use in your belt?

Your xperia acro s may be too big for this, but you may consider a Maxpedition belt holster.  I carry a Samsung S3 Mini (a small phone, though) in such a belt holster, and I cut the top flap off the holster to make it a drop-in version.

Something like this:

I use a Defender series Otterbox...

+3 (or whatever number we're on).  I've also handled a Griffin Defender, which seems very solid as well, although the detachable belt clip isn't as nice as the one that comes with the Otterbox.  Would also like to look at a Lifeproof case, but haven't had the opportunity yet.

I just have my iPhone in the left trousers pocket. All keys go into the right pocket.

Thats a nice idea, been spotting other sheaths like that one, im really considering an option like that.

A custom leather could also be a nice idea but dont know any "leathermans"  :P around, might be worth the try to find out what they can offer and how much would it cost.

Something to consider...

You should also check Metro's Skinths at http://skinthsolutions.com/...

There are some good choices there.

You read my mind, i just asked the user metro about two of them. The only thing holding me back is to see if i can spare the cash because dollars are costing more and more here.
