On my way to the hospital...
on: October 08, 2013, 10:37:25 AM
I'll start, don't worry, I'm not sick :)

I've enlisted as a 'test-rabbit'(?) for medicines. Now on a three-hour train journey to the other side of the country, to sit in a hospital there and be monitored, and stuff.

I'm much too nervous, because well, of course, there are things that -could- go wrong...

I'm testing (well, being tested on..) a new medicine for kids with too little growing-hormones. They're now testing it to see it's not dangerous (so not yet if it really works). Staying the night this evening, they'll put the stuff in me tomorrow morning, and then I'll have to stay until sunday.

Did I say I'm nervous, yet?  :-\

Well, they also mentioned that it looks a lot like some other medicine, so they know what might happen (and of course, that medicine is already tested, and sold, so it's safe)

Still nervous...  :ahhh

A friend of mine in Toronto used to do these regularly (like every 6 months or so) and I think it's great that people are willing to be guinea pigs to help others. Of course the financial compensation is encouraging!

Good luck Tom  :tu: Think of it this way, you're being paid to be pampered by nurses  ;) ...

... while they inject you with noxious chemicals that'll make your poo green, your eyes yellow, and your toes drop off .... unless of course they're still trialing the original batch and then it's your fingers that drop off .... but you'll still be able to browse the forum using your nose which will likely be distended and covered in scabs but still attached. Just hope it's not batch 3 or your voice will be going up a few octaves followed by every bone in your body dissolving and Tom becomes a big gelatinous mess on the floor :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

When I was younger there was a place called the Consumer Product Testing Co nearby that would do trials on sunscreen, deodorant, shampoo, etc.  We saw it as a way to pick up some quick cash (and the occasional chemical burn....  :ahhh )

I'm led to believe you don't want to get Lynx and lye confused ....  Let's hope they don't store that gumption they're giving Tom (bmot - not JD) in the same cupboard (no, not that Tom either) as the toilet cleaner

Doctor: I'm sorry Mr Tom, I have good news and bad news
bmot: Bad news first please ....
Doctor: We've completely destroyed your intestinal tract .... but your farts have a lovely pine forest odour

...so this one time in the autopsy suite... :D

Don't forget, this has already gone through a certain degree of safety testing.  Phase 1 trials look for unexpected problems--usually liver enzyme elevations or renal changes, but they would be just enzyme changes really.  Actual serious outcomes usually involve Phase 3 studies (and Phase 4).

I hope the food is good!  :)
