You should name her Val, as in Valkyrie.

Just as many a great hero has had no known name, many great tools have no name, they just are. The Lone Rebar just sounds silly.

Alright, so the final name list (I think) is:

  • Rebarbra
  • Rebecca
  • Bob
  • Dave the Rebarbarian
  • Rebarbarella
  • Speedy
  • Tetsuo
  • Val(kyrie)
  • The Rebar With No Name
  • Rena
  • Leatherhead (from a friend of mine)
Sorry if I missed any. There were plenty! As good a name as Tim would make, I work in reasonable proximity to a Tim with a very tiny humour gland.

So, via a brand-new shiny PHP randomizer script, here is our podium:

  • Val(kyrie)
  • The Rebar With No Name
  • Rebarbarella
  • Leatherhead (from a friend of mine)
  • Rena
  • Dave the Rebarbarian (my sisters and I love that show)
  • Speedy
  • Rebecca
  • Bob
  • Rebarbra
  • Tetsuo

So Val it is! I admit, I was rooting for the Rebarbarian, but what can you do? Valkyries are pretty badass.

Days 2 and three this evening, after I get back to actual home!

Day 2 was, as you may have already assumed, a backstage-and-onstage theatre day for Val (and, of course, for me). The only downside is that I couldn't use my camera.

The reamer came in handy again when we needed to (I'm not making this up) poke a bunch of holes in a frozen turkey covered in black wig spray. We needed the holes to install little dowel legs on the bottom to raise the turkey up, making it more visible in its roasting pan. It was actually not a very easy reaming job—that turkey was frooooooooooooooozeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnn. Moreso after we added the water and dry ice to make it look like it was still on actual fire. The audience ate it up.

The effect, I mean. Not the turkey. That was one grody turkey.

During the intermission, I needed Val to fix a loose doorknob. The Phillips driver took it apart, the slot driver/prybar pried the plate off so I could check the internal mechanism, and the Phillips driver put it all back together again. Good as sub-new!

On Day 3, it was time for the big tear-down! All the flats had to come down, the risers had to come apart (some doofus screwed them together! Not me!), and then the furniture, flats and risers had to go upstairs into a 26-foot U-Haul.

Val is useless at heavy lifting, but I repeatedly needed something to push against the sides of the screws in the risers to give the threads something to bite against, or most of the screws would just spin uselessly instead of coming out (they were sunk waaaaaay to far.) The slot driver worked famously.

The main blade scored a lot of paint that was keeping trim attached to the flats. I should have seen that coming. That one was my fault. Still sharp! No touch-ups required!

When I went to move the ancient truck, the battery was dead. Unfortunately, Val doesn't have jumper cables. Fortunately, whenever I'm driving a strange large truck, I bring my own! This wouldn't have done me any good, though, because the battery was covered by a metal grate held on by four 1/2" square bolts. Good news: Val the Rebar has just the pliers for the job! With the cover off, the battery got a jolt, and the truck came back from the dead.

The pliers also had the dubious but important mission of removing two large slivers from my hands, because I'm too dumb to bring gloves. That's how I roll. Stupidly, that is.

So, apart from sweating the little things, Val actually saved the day with that truck. Here's to a successful Day 2 and an even more successful Day3!

Jothra,

I just discovered this thread, and thank you for doing this. :tu:
PST is my first pliers based MT, and I too have a Rebar as an update to the PST.  I do hope Val will go thru all 30 days without a scratch.  :)

I have high hopes for Val. My Wave survived five years of moderate-to-heavy abuse, and finally broke at the handle when I was squeezing for all I was worth. The Rebar has beefier pliers, and what I believe is a sturdier, one-piece handle construction. Time will tell.

Jothra: I can't recomend Ironclad gloves highly enough. I've put a pair of their Framer gloves through hell and back and they're a bit tatty but still going strong. They do offer ones with more protection but for my crewing work they were just right.

How do you think the rebar pliers work with the large cutters in the plier head.

I haven't used mine but it looks like they might get in the way.

I really do like the wire cutters. I have used them and they work great.

I believe that the same cutters are used on all the leathermans with replaceable wire cutters.

Now quit using multitools for hammers  :pok:

great thread so far Jothra I'm enjoying reading about this mid sized leatherman doing full size jobs. :tu:

Oh, finding gloves isn't the problem. Finding my brain is the problem. I am looking for a new pair of gloves, though. Thanks for the info. I think I can get those at my favourite tool store. Yay!

The pliers worked just fine unbolting the battery cover on the U-Haul the other day. No complaints.

But hammer is my middle name!

Ha ha! Just kidding.

It's actually part of my last name.
