So what size sak do you prefer to edc on a day to day basis ???

This isn't a Vic versus Wenger debate, just wondered what you guy's thought was the optimal size for normal pocket carry edc ???

I prefere the 85 -93 size range personnelly, as I think it has the best size/function balance :)

What about you guys ???

It's a tossup between 91 and 93mm for me.  Since I can't keep my new HAIII Farmer out of my pocket now, I voted 93mm.

I've had absolutely no problem carrying a Vic Atlas in my pocket. It's just a matter of positioning it correctly against my key chain... And I didn't even know smaller SAKs existed until about a year ago. My first encounter with a Classic made me giggle.

How do you get on with the Atlas mate ???, it was always one of the 111mm I was tempted to buy :)

My dad got it for my 16-th (or 17-th?) birthday, which would place it some time five or six years ago. The Atlas is an absolutely amazing tool, but I will focus on the weak points here (bear in mind that everything else about it is a strong point):

The Phillips slips, which is no surprise. It's not catastrophic, but you do need to put in more effort than you should.

The blade does not hold an edge very well. I haven't sharpened it for the first few years, but haven't used it all that much during that time, either.

The locking mechanism broke. It's likely my fault for not cleaning and oiling the knife, but it did break. You could still lock the blade manually, until...

Stuff pulling on the lanyard ring in my BoB caused the ring to detach along with its base. This triggered the displacement of a nearby panel (which happened to be the blade's resting point) and an overall destruction of the knife's value, since the blade not only refused to lock, but also moved freely in a nearly 360 degree angle.

Leather punch is very difficult to get out, though tweezers help.

That pretty much covers it. Despite the horror story above, I like the knife a lot and have recently sent it in for repair (making me feel like a cripple without it). As long as it worked, it was a beautiful piece of engineering and shined in every task I put it to. Not to mention the locking blade series makes smaller SAKs look (and feel) like toys. They're no longer manufactured, but you can still get one off eBay for around 40 USD. Highly, highly recommended tool.

P.S. Hercules and Workchamp have more tools, but I feel the added bulk isn't worth it. Personally, I think Victorinox hit a brilliant balance between size and functionality in the Atlas.

P.P.S. it is. Shown with it is my neighbor's Classic (?), which was the first non-gigantic SAK I've ever seen.

So who voted for the 84mm ???

84mm gets my vote for EDC.

I have both regular Tinker and small Tinker and much prefer the small Tinker for EDC.

Carried loose in a trouser pocket the small Tinker is barely noticeable to me.

However, if a regular Tinker is carried in a trouser pocket I can feel it move around in the pocket and frequently notice it being there.  Nevertheless, I do prefer the regular sized (bigger) Tinker for hiking and camping.

Thats cool, I've got 2 'my first' Vic's, one Alox Lumberjack and one normal Lumberjack, plus an Alox Cadet, so I guess you could say I was a fan too :)

Thanks for the reply mate . Yeah I agree with you it does have the best balance of tool/size of the 111mm in my opinion, and it's a shame that Vic dropped it :(

Sorry to here about the probs you had with your's, hopefully Victorinox will be able to put them right and send it back out to you soon :)

BTW that's not a classic, classics are 58mm long ;), here's a (crappy) picture of one alongside a 91mm swisschamp :)

I hope I've got this right but I voted 91mm as I believe that's the size of my Swisschamp which is my favourite E.D.C since some thieving s.o.b made off with my Climber
