New dishwasher review
on: October 31, 2013, 01:56:51 PM
I need to replace the dishwasher that died a few months ago, and since the old one lasted about ten years I figured I'd just replace it with the modern version of the same one.  Just for the fun of it I thought I'd read some reviews.  On in particular caught my eye...

"I like this machine because it's white and very quiet. It has the buttons that are I'm used to. Also the lights do the same and in a helpful manner. It makes the water hotter than my sink can! But don't try cooking in it, your food will get wet. It sits right on my counter, handy, but I had to put it there."

Ok, so where to start with this one?  It's good because it's white?  Must be a review from the deep, deep South!

A machine that washes dishes?  Is that what a dishwasher does?  And here I was using it to get those unsightly stains out of my bath tub.

Too Heavy?  What, you don't think a belt clip would help?

Cooking in it?  What about soup?  That's supposed to be wet anyway....

It's a good thing you are used to buttons or your pants would fall off.... especially with a heavy dishwasher clipped to them.

well, now we know why we have to be careful when trusting a review.
never know how qualified someone is to write the review

I love reading reviews.  On the one hand it does give you valuable info, such as if numerous people have mentioned having the same problem, you know that it's a legitimate issue and not just one instance.

On the other hand, you have the fun reviews, like the people who complain that lightbulbs or ovens get too hot when they are on, or guys like this one who (I hope anyway!) are just out for a laugh.

The Amazon review where the guy tried shaving his nether regions was the best...

You are behind the times Grant.
apparently there is a newish trend to use your dishwasher to poach certain foods (sealed in special bags).

I read about it a while back and may have even posted about it here..
Here is an article on that:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/10269205/Why-using-the-dishwasher-is-the-latest-cooking-phenomenon.html

"Using a dishwasher to cook meals has become an increasingly popular cooking technique, and the results are reportedly surprisingly good.....The dishwasher works similarly to a steam oven, and while some foods can be cooked on an 'eco setting', most will need more heat to cook properly.

Salmon requires a relatively low temperature to cook through but raw meat, such as medium rare beef, needs to get to a temperature of nearly 50 degrees."

On which one to buy I would suggest a model by Mielle or Bosch/Siemens

They make very good use of the space.
Get a model with the functions you will actually use. (A long ECO mode for when you are not in a harry and a quick, Turbo mode when in a harry are good. See if you can get a 75 Celsius setting too, instead of the standard 65)
A cuttlery drawer model will tend to have more space inside.
Make sure it has a top sprayer too as some of the cheaper ones will only have a lower and a middle one, thus there will be no water coming from above and the dishes on the top will not wash that well.

Intenet reviews can be useful but not to be trusted blindly IMO.
The Amazon review where the guy tried shaving his nether regions was the best...
OK, I'm scared. What do I look up?

DKS gave some good tips, I think. I should add that I have being using the same Neff diswasher since 1997 with no problems at all -knock wood. I don't know how they're faring these days though.

If I get a build in I'll have to change all my cupboards so I'm just getting a countertop on.  I think Danby is the only ones who still make a countertop one.  My last one was a Danby and it lasted almost ten years.

Amazone Review

NOT SAFE FOR WORK!
  Thank you! I needed a good laugh. One can't make that stuff up unless one is a real pro, in which case why bother. NOT SAFE FOR WORK INDEED!

On a side note, I have a confession to make:

On our first vacation as adults my friends and I decided, while solidly drunk, to take some pics of us nude with underwear made of shaving foam. I think the foam was Noxema, surely there was menthol in it. Seriously, do NOT try that... I've been using shaving cream ever since.  :ahhh

Sorry for derailing the thread.

Huh, wonder if they sell a list of forums to internet spammers, like the phone spammer's list.

Possibly. My guess is they just crawl for keywords. They found a topic on appliances and they jumped on it.

I've got a countertop Indesit which I'm very pleased with. Definitely beats doing the washing up!

The only "cooking" I've ever had anything to do with was at a friend's housewarming where one was used to make chocolate vodka. It's the most foolproof way of uniformly heating it without boiling off all the vodka or cooking the chocolate. Or so the internet told us.
