Alternative ways to EDC
on: May 19, 2008, 11:06:54 PM
Hi guy's, as most of you know I've not been carrying my MT's much of late (about 2 months) and really haven't felt the need to carry one either (burn the heretic :D). But my old survivalist instinct keep telling me I should carry one for the 'what if' and 'TEOTWAWKI' situations :-\

I'm certain that in my life the Farmer can handle just about anything, it's individual tools are ever bit as tough and useable as any found on an MT, but still I want a heavyweight back up ::)

But given the current anti knife climate (we've had a rash of quite brutal knifing's recently over here) and my desire to be free of a belt pouch during summer, so that all the sheeple can see I'm all 'tooled up' and ready to inflict harm on them ::), I'm wondering if anyone carries an MT in a rucksack on a day to day basis ???, I do carry a rucksack everyday anyway, and I was thinking of leaving a Swisstool in there for the odd occation when I actually need one :)

Are the any downsides to this method of carry ???, I wouldn't have thought so, but like my Mum always say's 'It can't hurt to ask' :)

So have you guys found any novel ways of carrying your MT's when not on your body ???

I carry one (crunch usually) in my rucksack daily just slip it into a sheath of your choice. I usually put it into a separate compartment to my main one so it easier to get at should i need to :)

That's what I thought I'd do, but I might loop some paracord around the belt loop and then use one of those MaxPat carabiners to secure it to one of the straps outside the rucksack, while keeping the tool inside, if you see what I mean

The way I figure it, I'll just have to pull on the paracord to get the ST :)

Well, what do you define as "heavyweight"? There's a knifeless Fuse out there guaranteed to get you on any blood hound's good side...

I define heavy duty as impromtu bike repairs, DIY home repairs, and more recently trying to pull the exaust of my bro's bike for painting (it had rusted on and wasn't coming off without a fight) :)

As for the LM Knifeless fuse, I reckon there just about the most pointless (pun not intended) thing out there ::)

Just re-read it, didn't mean to come across stroppy mate :D

Personally, I like the Maxpedition OCTA.
http://www.ebags.com/maxpedition/octa_153_versipack_153/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=103253

One of the advantages, is in the front pouch
http://www.ebags.com/products/view/ZoomColorsViews.cfm?fuseaction=imagePop&ModelID=103253&ipsid=103253_1_5&PhotoLink=2&view=dxlrg&sub_site_id=43
Inside, there is 3 elastic loops. And in the loops of my octa I keep an LM Surge, Charge TTI, and all their respective screw bit are in the bottom of the pouch.  Plus, the piece of of material where the Maxpedition label is happens to be open on the right/left sides.  So that is now a home for a Skeletool. ANd the elastic strap holds a 3 AAA LED minimag light, and that camoflaged the Skeletool.

Wore it the the AC Borgata hotel/casino, right under the noses of casino security(FYI, Most casino security are moonlighting AC/local LE) :police:.  They noticed my bandaged foot and hiking stick, and never noticed the Octa.

So much for Homeland security ::)
Imagine if I was with Hamas? :ahhh

A word of warning: some security guards in Israel will go absolutely bonkers if they see some kind of "hidden" compartment or whatever.

I carry my "Tanks" in my car. I have so much on me, not much room "on me person" for a bigger MT,
but I like having the Swisstool RS or Sog S60 around.

Have you ever thought about removing the blade(s) from your MT? Easy with a Sog and do-able with others.
It's not like your going to break em or permanently change them; and as for a knife,
your covered for most things with your Farmer.

Just wondering ;)

Still, try to smuggle an Octa into the country.  Not only is it worth every penny, but it's the most civilian looking of the Maxpedition line ;)

As far as the way "things are" in the UK.  If I was there.  I can actually see them drop the SAS on my sorry a** if I was carrying a 2 liter diet coke and some mentos!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diet_Coke_and_Mentos_eruption

Nope, I'd never remove the knife, it's man's oldest, and most flexible tool :). And besides if I removed the knife blade to make them legal, I'd have to remove the saw and file blades too ::) (yes the law really is that pedantic).

This is a nice $29 bag, and the black color makes it look less "tactical".

http://www.countycomm.com/BAILOUTBAGGEN5.htm

Lots of pockets for easy access to a MT.

I'll agree with the Maxpedition recommendation. I carry a Maxpedition Versipak Fatboy with a mix of daily essentials and work related items. It keeps the pockets of my slacks light and empty, and does not have me lugging tools and phone and such on my belt.

http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=31&IDCategory=4

Holds a ton, but doesn't feel under packed if I don't fill it up. Nor does it allow so much space that you find yourself packing up the kitchen sink like so many of the EDC folk seem wont to do. Unobtrusive to carry slung over the shoulder, has a very convenient sheath built into the outside that houses a multitool perfectly and within easy reach under a velcro strap.

It reminds me of a camera case or perhaps a fisherman's kit. It is a bit tactical looking I suppose, but I prefer that over a collegiate look or the whole metrosexual urban thing (designer man purses with ridiculous feminine detailing).

You could pack the following in it easily:

MT
Flashlight
MP3 player and ear bud type headphones
companion tools of your trade (in my case, a small adjustable wrench and a tape measure)
map
lunch (sandwich, tin of soup, spoon)
cell phone
digi cam
and clip your keys to the D ring.

...and you'd still be able to fit the odd small item you may pick up on the town. Or with the molle on it's exterior, you can attach additonal bits. Not my thing, but you could. I do clip the tape to it while working. It really is a great item. Very well designed. And yes, if you are handgun fan, it is designed with that in mind as well. I don't have one in mine, but if I change my mind....

 ;)

Now I have to disagree here.  :P  The knifeless fuse to me makes perfect sense.  Without the knife blade in the mix you still get all locking tools which IMO is a huge benefit without any of the worry with being caught by a picky copper with a locking blade.  Tools such as the SOG PPP are great, but they lack the locking feature on the tools which is a shame.

For me, I always twin a MT with a SAK so therefore I have a knife blade anyway so the blade on the MT is kinda surplus to requirement.
I'm back!!
