The original design could have blade fall out of the holder and cut user's hand. I don't have one yet but other people say the blade come with it is super thick and if you replace it with thinner variety from hardware store it's not a tight fit. The new design have the finger guard wrap around the blade so there's no way it can fall out. Most pictures online are still the older design, take note of the index finger rest and you can probably see what I'm talking about.
I'm looking at a bunch of online pics, but I'm not seeing the change you're referring to...?

It used to be like what's in the picture, but now it wraps up to prevent blade move sideways and slip pass by it.
Today's yer lucky day! It's in this week's flyer. I'll probably pick up a few of them in case forum members want one- if not, they make great stocking stuffers.Def
I didn't get any- I had car trouble last week and I was somewhat preoccupied with that and buying another car (Jeep! ) that I didn't make it down. I'll be going there today or tomorrow, so if they have any left I'll grab a few extras and let you know.Def
Is there a "Land Rover Wave" over there like the Jeep Wave we have here?Def

Yep Motorbikes , although it wasn't so prolific once all these silly twist and go scooters hit the road I've never had any cyclists nod to me, regardless of what push bike I'm ridding
