I really like the mag glass on SAKs and for me they really aid in reading medication bottles and looking at watches im deciding to buy.   I don't have a SAK with a led YET .  my explorer plus is my go to SAK when at the fleamarket searching for Gshocks.

Magnifier - unless of course you desperately want the illuminating power of less than a match

Magnifier primarily because I don't like stuff that needs batteries/fuel on my SAK/MT.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Same, unless they put on a chainsaw layer, then I would be down with keeping fuel in it.

The usefulness of the LED depends on ambient lighting conditions. If it is pitch dark or close to it, that little LED can be a great thing. For example, walking around a dark house at night after you've just turned out the light in the bathrrom or have been blinded by the fridge light.

...or putting a key in the keyhole somewhere it is pitch dark. (for example, on my back door at nighttime)

My fat fingers just voted for the led when I wanted the magnifier

LED would be a great addition...if it wasn't such low output

I always have a keychain torch too so it is magnifier for me. (if you get a Victorinox with an LED make sure you get the newer, brighter, white ones)

Neither, honestly can't remember when I used any of them on a SAK last. Out of the two, I'd vote magnifier though but I wish Vic would add something more useful to that layer.

Most definitely the mag - I don't like SAK's with watches or torches etc and I use my mag all the time just because I can.

I voted the magnifier. I guess I like to look at things close up. There is also wenger's solution of the universal wrench which has been modded into vics.

Magnifier definitely because I also carry a 7 bulb LED flashlight (3.5 inch long) on my belt along with my Vic Deluxe Tinker. Actually, I voted magnifier as the lesser of two evils. I don't think I ever used the magnifier on my Champ back when I carry one of those.

   We can dream...

Definitely the magnifier for me. I use it all the time, certainly more than I do its layer mate, the inline phillips.  When I first played with my Champ I was surprised how strong the magnification is. The magnifier was what inspired me to buy the Explorer a few weeks back, and it's working out really well for my EDC.

This is exactly what I do with my SAKs.  Much brighter light too.  Those Photon Freedom Micro lights are very bright compared to any other keychain LED I've owned :tu:  The magnifier is more useful as part of the toolset of a SAK imo.  I wouldn't carry one in my wallet as I've seen others mention as I'd be afraid my weight would lead to its doom ;)

Is it true you can combine these to build your own Death Star?

If something is hard to read I'll just get closer to it. In dark spaces no matter how hard I squint I'm not seeing anything without a little bit of light.
Light>>>Mag
Only complaint is the batteries aren't easy to come by or cheap... Unless purchased online.

Dislike the mag so much I love the Mods where it's replaced with both openers. Seems like a better use of space.

Are you all blind?

I don't think the mag glass is effective enough to be useful, and I don't carry a flashlight around with me.

My thoughts exactly... but like someone else in this thread said, now that I have a magnifying glass on me all the time, I might just use it because I CAN. The LED light can really be useful in a dark place though.

Well, I do wear glasses...  8)  I find it plenty effective enough to be useful.   :P

It's like using a microscope if you hold it up to your eye!  Make sure you don't have any of the other tools extended of course, if you don't want to skewer your eyeball like a pickled onion.  It's hard to illustrate in a photo just how good it is, but I've given it a go.

However, I can see why having a torch on your SAK might be a priority if you don't carry one otherwise.  I always have at least a Streamlight Nano that I keep on my keys.  Also as a backup to my backup, as it were, the digital SAK aka iPhone 4S makes a very effective torch with a rechargeable battery.
