database issues... I think it's sorted now but I have to find out what is causing the issue, I have my suspicions

Sorry about that everyone. There was a glitch in last night's automatic backup and the server basically froze up for a bit.  Thankfully our current server company is happy to work with us to resolve issues as quickly as possible and they performed a reset that put us back online.

I sent them an email at 0231 local time, they responded at 0257 that they were looking into it and by 0316 they were reporting that the issue was resolved.  45 minutes may be a long time to wait for a pizza delivery, but it's pretty good for server repair!

Wow. Glad to hear about the good service after... emm... less stellar service from some... other... company.

I was getting a little shakey and panicked without my evening fix of MT insanity. I'm very happy to see everything is back up and running.

I saw it was down,  was sad.

But I understand things happen.

Are you sure it was a database/backup issue?  Might have been a pastry/Grant issue

Mysql & the backup routine got into a fight, and ground the server to a halt.  Also seems the new pretty URL mod on the forum had blown the database size up hugely...

I didn't look at it very closely, only saw that the url cache was twice the size of the actual messages. Checking the support thread for the mod saw there is a new update for it, so updated it. New cache is much smaller now, I think they changed the routine to how things are indexed or something. I haven't had time to check any further, busy checking other potentially broken stuff... plus it's Sunday :P

that is good enough, I was just curious , and 2x cache quickly grows,  :twak:

thanks for explaining.

I was told the server got into a resource battle between MYSQL and the backup routine... It would be great to find out that was indeed the issue, but it's not the only large database running on the machine. I've wanted to clean install the wiki's for ages... they've been upgraded so many times that it seems each time new things break (all in the name of keeping them secure and within the latest LTS releases.) and cause grief for myself and the other admins.

In the end it's a lot of time and effort, and rather unfortunately we don't earn any wages from maintaining the sites. I'm not complaining though as it's all work that looks great on my CV, and I have been "paid" a few items such as my Swisstool and Cybertool, and when I'm back home Grant invites me to several beers  :drink:  Plus we have a bunch of other upgrades in process that are higher priority...

Glad we are back up, I was concerned!  At first I thought my internet was acting up, but everything else was working.  Glad this was short lived, I remember the longer outages and I don't want that to happen again.  It's awesome to know we have such good support for the site!

I now know what a MTO-less life is like. And it scared me.

Yup, for the first time in nearly a year, I could not get on this site for my nightly updating/browsing after having limited access throughout the day.  And as Nhoj said, it was scary :ahhh  I didn't know what to do with myself when I discovered I couldn't get on and likely wasn't going to be able to for the rest of my night.  I realized just how much I really enjoy coming on here daily, and how weird it seemed when I had to go without my fix...I don't know if that's a good thing, or a sad thing

Either way, glad this place has great tech support, from both the server company and Whoey :salute:
