spirit phillips driver blew up on me
on: November 19, 2013, 01:16:08 AM
Yeah

I was taking out a few Phillips screws out of a desk I was moving  and on side of my Phillips broke off and shot across the room never to be found again.

I normally don't take my spirit to work. Normally I would be carrying a full size tool.

What do you all think

will they fix it for a warranty issue :)

or blame me for using my spirit to hard :(

I'm not sure.

where do I send a email Vic USA or Vic Swiss

I've never had to send anything back to them. :)

Il get some good pics tomorrow for here and the great BROKEN multitool thread.

I like my spirit alot. I'm bummed that I am going to live without of mine for the foreseeable future.

Sorry to hear that Joel. :-\

Did the pivot break or the phillips driver itself? Or was it one wing of the phillips? If it was a chair then I'm guessing the screw was glued in?

Can't say I'm looking forward to the pictures, but I'd still like to see them nonetheless. :salute: And the bad screw as well. Did you manage to take it out eventually?

It was a wing on the Phillips that broke off.

yeah I got the desk apart easy enough

I wish I would have been using alot of force trying to remove a tough screw but that isn't the case.  I wasn't using the tool hard at all . The wood screws I was talking out I put in with a junk drill driver. I don't see it forcing a screw down that tight.

I must have did the wrong thing just right.

Wow Joel, I wonder if you got a bad one!  Maybe there was a problem in the philips stamped part, a defective one or something!

Guess you should have used the OHT....Just kidding! LOL

I dropped my Vic Spirit and Swisstool off at the Victorinox Shop in Cologne.
They sent it to Ibach.
Turnaround was somewhat slow, but the work was flawless.
I claimed a warranty issue for the Spirit (teh Plierhead had soem minor play) and it got replaced although I might have overstressed teh Pliers a bit, being used to the Swisstool and MP 600.
I sent the Swisstool in for Service (Which I paid a hollering 8,- € for  :)).
I asked them to regrind the Chisel and Awl and sharpen the blades while at it.
I got back my own tool, but with a completely new plierhead and new tools.

When I sent Knives to Ibach directly, turnaround was quick (8 days, IIRC) and they did actually repair the knives i sent in and only replaced one.

This rambling shall only illustrate the perfect warranty service I have come to know from Victorinox.
I would send the Spirit to Vic directly and guess they either repair it or replace it free - They stand behind their products.

I have sent a couple SAKs to Victorinox NA.   They will make it right, no problem.  Since the Spirit has rivets, you will likely get a new Spirit, rather than your old one back.

Oh and I definitely want to see pics! :D

Really sorry to hear that. I do wonder what the issue is considering that I've put a lot of stress on the Phillips of my Spirit and it's fine

I had a pretty rapid turn-around on an Explorer I sent to Vic in the U.S.

Sorry to hear about the grief. And... wow... weird. I think this goes to show that the best made tools are still just tools, not mythically endowed with qualities of indestructibility. I don't consider the Spirit a heavy use tool, but I'm sure it would be up to most anything I'd throw at it. This breakage seems like a fluke.

I remember reading here on MTO about a Philips SD on a Spirit that got all rounded after some light use. This was recently but I can't remember who posted that.

I'd contact Vic first, then send the tool in. I don't think you'll have a problem. Me, on the other hand, I don't think I could handle pics of this atrocity :ahhh :D

This is the first I've heard of that happening. Maybe it was stress put into that particular peace of metal somewhere along the production process. Or just a bad section of metal from the stock metal they used to machine the tools. Perhaps it could be a heat miss-treatmeant that caused some stress, an inconsistency, or an irregularity in the make up of that particular peace of metal. ...Somethin.

That may have been me. My first use of the Spirit Phillips was tightening the screws on a guitar tuning peg. These are not the sort of thing you really crank on, I just turned them to tight because they were very loose. The fins on the Phillips were damaged in the process. These were chromed screws.

I expect MT Phillips fins to get damaged with time and real use. But this was very light use.

I suspect my Spirit has an improperly hardened driver. Because of this, I avoid using it. I suppose if it rounds, I'll just send it in, but..

Do they replace them with a refurbished one or do they always replace them with a brand new one?.

Thats one thing that worries me. I dont want someone else's used tool.
