Big ticket collector items. Original Vs Limited Edition reproductions.

Since joining the team here I have gone from user to collector (addict). Up until now I have been an avid user of my tools, and I have really gotten allot out of this. Obsessing over multitools has gotten my mind off allot of stress lately. Currently I am considering making my first major purchase of a true "collectors item". I realise this will not be worth a fortune for some time but perhaps it's something I could start and leave to my son to enjoy (or hock) someday. I only just realised the potential of this the other day.
So anyways. I am looking at getting an old first generation SAK or a reproduction. Thing is, the reproductions are worth dramatically less than what they used to be. Why do you think this is so? Simply a sign of the times? Do you think originals are better? Please add any of your own thoughts on starting a collection.

I would rather have a Model 1890 Elsener Soldier's Knife in nice shape than either Victorinox's or Wenger's recent reproductions, quality tho they are.  How many of the originals still exist?  Who knows?  Has the value of the Heritage SAK knives really declined? (first sold at circa $450)

"What is the riddle of steel?"   Somehow adding the (organically essential and biologically-derived) element Carbon in a certain proportion with the metallic element Iron results in a fantastic material -- strong, flexible, able to be given a sharp and useful edge.  And that's just for starters...

I believe RRP was $500 USD. You can now get them for $300.
Not a bad attempt on answering the riddle. Maybe I should make it the question on the next tool give away. Just need to find a nice tool.
