Terry Pratchett books suggestions...

Ok, finally decided to take the plunge... Obviously I can't get all the 40 Discworld novels at once, so I'd like some opinions as to where to start... I'm quite sure there are some fans around here

Never read them BECAUSE there is no clear order to read them in.

I'll ask my wife. She has just about every book Terry Pratchett wrote. She's read most of them more than once. I'll ask her and report back.

Wife says to start with Mort. Or just read from the beginning in the order they were written. From her text message "Yes and no. Each book can/will read as a stand alone. But there are references that only make sense if you read in the order they were written. Which. May not be chronological as the storyline goes."

Mort is fine as a start, I think. Unseen University was a great read - But so was pretty much the rest I read from Discworld.
And, apart from the "usual" discworld stories, I pretty much enjoyed the Discworld Fairytales (I shall wear Midnight, wintersmith I guess and the third title eludes me...) although they are aimed at a younger readership

Read them in the order they were written, it all makes sense, eventually

Lots of the books are fairly independent; Moving Pictures, Going Postal, Pyramids. Many others have ongoing characters; Commander Vimes and the Night Watch, Rincewind, Grannie Weatherwax, Death. 

AFAIK all the books are written in chronological order, so starting from the start is a good idea, but you could also read all the books relating to a common character, so start with Colour of Magic and then read all the further Rincewind books for example.

Having read all but one of them...start at the beginning,Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic...the Discworld evolves a lot,and it makes best sense to loosely follow the evolution.

Otherwise,follow the Lancre Coven in Thier chronology, or Sam Vimes and the City Watch in theirs.

Agreed. Read them in order. They all sort of fit together, and like many have said, there are references in his books that sort of encourage reading them in order.

By the way, try and get the movie Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic. It is as good as the books.

Another series you might enjoy is Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovich. The tag line is 'What if Harry Potter grew up and joined the filth?'

Basically,it's set in modern day london(and very well researched ), and follows the adventures of the Metroploitan Police's wizards! Its four books and growing!

Have you read the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher?  Sounds like a similar premise but with a Wizard private investigator based in Chicago.  Not comedies per se, but very witty.

PS: Im a big fan of mixing up literary genres, as my fascination with Shadowrun novels proves (I mean who wouldn't love a mix of cyberpunk and fantasy? )

There are some board games based on Terry Prachett's books. I can totally recommend Ankh Morpork. You don't need to know any of the books contents, it's just more fun if you do.

Not recommended for overly competitive players or sore losers. You have to be treacherous and cunning to stand a chance here.

If you want to read them all, start with Colours of Magic. But I think Pratchett wasn't as good with his pacing back then. I found Mort more gripping, or Guards, Guards! if you want to read more about Commander Vimes and his City Watch/Policemen/Soldiers.

If you don't want to dive in too deep into Discworld, you can also start with Going Postal (Which was also made into an excellent movie). Though Tiffany Aching is aimed at adolescent readers, The Wee Free Men is also a good place to start, it will guide you gradually into the world!

I would make a choice based on this factors:

• If you like LEOs or soldiers, start with Guards, Guards! and then read the other Watchmen books
• If you want to drop into the Up-to-date Discworld, read Going Postal, Making Money and Raising Steam
• If you want to start non-confusing and ease your way in, or you like Scots, get The Wee Free Man

Personally I would start with Wee Free Men and gift it to some kid if you don't like it (Don't worry, you will like it!).
