Are there multitools from Japan?
on: May 20, 2008, 07:41:12 AM
The last time I was in Japan, I saw a shop selling American-made multitools. A couple of Leathermans, some SOGs. Thinking about it now, does anyone know if there are any multitools made by the Japanese?

I read somewhere that some knives are made there, and they have a pretty good reputation for steel quality. Not surprising, considering that's where the Katana was born.

But given how innovative the Japanese are, I'm sure someone there will be able to make a great multitool, no? So are there any examples?

The Japanese call it "murtitoor".

Seriously speaking, I have googled for several times Japanese made with Japanese brand plier based multitool since I got interested in multitools but I have not found one.

This is the only one I found, I vintage Japanese pocket knife similar to SAK.

But essentially, SOG is still an American company. I'm really asking if there are any Japanese multitool companies.

Eddie, that's an interesting one you've got there. But yah, it's an SAK clone. The types of implements look almost exactly like my Wenger Traveler.

I think the problem is that the Japanese are not used to having any of their items break down to require fixing!

Alot of Spyderco knives are made in Japan . The knives are clearly marked and in no way is a bad thing . Seki City in Japan is like Sheffield in England and is famous for its steel . Like Spyderco some of Sogs knives are made there but I'm sure their multitools are not . I have no problems buying Japanese steel , my Spyderco Atlantic salt is Seki city and its a really trustworthy knife .

Is that Japanese pocket knife worth anything? I have the same one that was given to me by my great uncle about 15 years ago!

You still remember Hiroo Onada, BT! There was another one, Fumio Nakahira. I was also wondering what murtitoor they had with them that helped them survive in the Philippine jungle for more than 2 decades after WWII.

Nakahira is a new one

Among those of us into wilderness survival, Onoda does have a "holy of holies" quality.  Granted, some locals on Lubang consider(ed) him a thief, murderer, and a PITA.  Still, what was cool was he never surrendered.  The only reason he "stood down" was he got orders to from his old CO.

I'm not aware of any Japanese multitool companies. However, there were a few multitools made in Seki Japan that were then sold by American companies:

SOG ToolClip
SOG Micro ToolClip
Al Mar 4x4
Al Mar QuickClip
Meyerco Paradox

In addition, the very first Leatherman PST's were made in Japan. :)

BINGO! I was doing a search on this Seki City you guys keep mentioning, and found a Japanese company that makes multitools. Not quite like the plier based foldable ones we are used to seeing here, but more like those Caterpillar tools.

Here's the link. They have some SAK lookalikes too.

According to their ordering page http://www.gsakai.co.jp/jp/english/index/kojin.html, it says they can't do paypal or credit card, but will accept money order or remittance. So I guess you can order one and they will ship it to you.

The stuff (at least Blades) that comes out of Seki City really isnt bad at all. I have a old pushdagger made there by Cold steel that has been a constant Companion now over 15 years. I actually held the new one to retire mine, however the quality was not the same as the Jap model.

I would certainly try something from there.

Interesting that this thread got revived. I happen to be going to Tokyo this week, and have emailed this company for information on where to purchase this tool in Tokyo. I hope they get back to me soon.

If you happen to come across an Al Mar 4x4 while you are there I'd be very interested in hearing about it...

I've never heard of this Al Mar 4x4. Googling it gives me a page on this site's museum page! It looks very interesting indeed, and I'd imagine the ppl from CRKT took a few pointers from that tool for their Zilla-tool.

Enlighten me, why would Japan be a place where someone would come across this tool?

Not sure if I got a good deal or not, but I did get one!

It's really a neat addition to my collection; very obscure and an interesting modern rendition of much older styling. The sheath is also an amazing piece of work. It's super-sized and amazingly well constructed.
