I think the hardest part will be ensuring that both sides match, the actual sanding and assembly should be fine. But we shall see. Need to go get some more sandpaper at some stage though!

Good call on the split, was thinking it was a bit off topic :D

As for custom scaled SAK's, i doubt my work would be half as good as the more experienced lot, so i'll probably just leave it to them! Not saying i wouldn't give it a go though....if some one wants to lend me one to practice on.....

Also would this not have been better in the Edged Tool section rather than General Tool Discussion?

very nice project Roadie. I'm sure it will come out very nice. I will also be attempting to put new scales
on some blades sometime this year.

like you were going to do, first I'll try and find some nice local woods, we have several to choose from.
then I'll go to a local knife maker and get some tips and pointers, we have many nice ones around
and they are very nice folks to deal with (I met several at a blade show here last year).

what I like the best (that's not local) is "ironwood" and "cocobolo" the later being a little toxic to work on but
I'll have ventilation and protection. they are so beautiful and I've read they can really last.

good luck mate and I can't wait for your final "work of art!"

Sounds like a good plan :) Yeah i've seen Cocobolo and it does look great, but i figure for a first attempt i'll start with something a bit cheaper! Next time maybe :)

Well went out to get some sandpaper today, and been practising going through the grits to get a decent finish. Hopefully this bar (had it lying around from a previous project) will fit in the holes in the handle, if not i'll have to get some more :( Taken this up to 400grit but still have 600 left, don't want to waste it though :)
Think it came up quite well, i'm more confident about doing all the sanding now though :)

Wood arrived today :D Started to sand down the inside face flat so they sit against the blade nicely. Pics below
The blanks as they arrived:

My flat sanding "jig":

One blank done, one to go:
