New Voyageur-like Mod
on: April 20, 2020, 08:32:25 PM
A month or so ago I misplaced a Super Cadet that I carried everyday.  I was bummed about it, but it did make me think about what I need every day in my weekday office setting.  I decided to try a Voyageur-like format but with a nail tool instead of the combo opener. I started out with a brand new Cadet for the nail file and knife blade and sacrificed a beater Golfer for the scissors.   It turned out great and I'm especially pleased with the very snappy action I ended up with.

Perfect mod, given my Celidor Voyageur, when I was carrying it; was mostly just used for fingernails and slight household stuff.  Nail file is a great tool to have; in my case.

I am SO wanting to try an 84mm Alox with scissors mod, and what I've been thinking up is something pretty much identical to this. Victorinox sent me back the old scissors (screw had been replaced with a chunk of brass wire serving as a pin; the spring is broke) when they rebuilt the 84mm Craftsman I have, but I don't have a backspring.  I swear, it's Victorinox themselves that was the enabler in this case; as I did not want to take apart an existing 84mm knife with scissors.

Thank you, Cody and Frailer!  It only took an hour or so and I'm really liking it.

Like everybody, I wish Vx would start making 84 mm SAKs with scissors again. I'd likely never mod another SAK in my life.  :)

Thanks again; I appreciate the compliments.

Myron

Great work Myron. That’s a smart looking Alox.  :like: I’m still to work up the courage to rebuild one...

I don't understand why there is not a cadet with scissors in the Vic catalogue.
Anyway good work.

Thanks everybody.  I hope to have this one for a long time.

@Max Stone, you get a pass for Alox modding, having already proven your "visible rivets" mettle with your brass scales.  Take it from me, everyone else, Max's peening skill is second to none.  :)

Cody, if you have an old 91mm scissor backspring, you can use that... just needs some tweeking...

You’ll also need to reshape the stopper portion to fit flush with the liners and that the scissors tip sits nicely inside...

Thanks guys!  It's always so fun when a modding plan comes together.

On this particular one, I did probably my best job peening the pin heads on the top side.  I trimmed the pins on the bottom side too close, though, so when it came time to peen I just decided to mash them more or less flat.  If I did this everyday I'd probably get good at it.  ;)

I wish someone would design, build, and sell a simple machine to work pin heads.  I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Thanks Myron  :hatsoff:  it can be quite satisfying to get a good result! My current mission is to find a local source of more stag horn, Alox will have to wait a little longer.
