Thank you Vic for ruining the Mini Champ ...
on: December 18, 2013, 08:37:18 PM
I went to Gander Mt yesterday to browse their SAKs and MTs and was disappointed in their selection.

More so, they had a Vic mini Champ which I almost bought until I saw it had an ink pen built into it. I HATE this. smurf you Vic for ruining this SAK. I already carry a fisher pen so why would I want to sacrifice the toothpick which I use... for a stupid pen.

I digress....

Well you can always just switch the scales with a Classic. I think most of the frequent Swiss forum posters have a bucket of those by now. ;)

I agree Sawman - to me that little pen is next to useless. But just my preference. You can still find the other (older?) models from dealers on the 'bay, or I'm assuming Tim can get them, or at least replacement scales.

To me, Vic made a bad call on that switch. A pen just isn't that hard to find. Everyone has one it two in the glove box, wherever.

If you want a set of plain red cellidor scales, I'll send you a pair gratis. PM if you're interested.

I will say that you could most often be able to whittle a toothpick wherever you are, but it's a lot harder to improvise a pen if you don't have one. ;)  Joking aside I do tend to agree, I have a lot more use for the toothpick than the mini pen.

That pen is only useless if you already have something better in your pocket.  If the SAK pen is all you have on you, and the captain of the Swedish bikini team wants you give you her phone number, it's the best pen ever. I like the pen, if nothing else as a backup to my Space Pen.  Options are good.

You can use the pen as a toothpick!  :pok:  Hopefully the ink is non-toxic!!!

Get alox, tape a toothpick to it. Problem solved! :D

I too would rather have the toothpick but I must say, the pen has saved the day more then once while in line at the atm machine, signing backs of checks.

The toothpick gets a lot of love around here, but I have never used it.  Not once.  As an actual implement for removing food particles from one's teeth, I find it too thick to be useful.  In terms of its uselessness, it is surpassed only by the corkscrew.  Again, that's just my mileage.  I guess I need wider gaps between my teeth, and more wine bottles in my mansack.

How come they just don't make it standard for all SAKs to have all three?

I use the toothpick for cleaning the SAK, it's perfect for that and I'd pick tweezers over it. I do find the pen is a very useful addition yet I just don't like that stupid plastic thumb stud and the fact one scale is thicker.

Maybe 58mm Plus scales can't be made and an extractable pen of that size would be hard to use, still I'd like to see them try. (Perhaps a pair of SAK mini-pliers, 58mm size, could be useful  :P )

They may have ruined it with the pen, but they also just made it perfect with alox   ;)

I've always preferred the pen over the toothpick.
My 58mm's pen gets used as much as any conventional pen. It's my go to pen on the go...

Thought for sure this was about the tool layout, why the scissors and combo tool are on the same side is beyond me.

Thanks for putting five of the six narrow blade tools on one side, and two very distinct large tools plus another blade on the other side, instead of one large and three small tools on each side.

The blunt implements all open in the same direction and the sharps all open towards the opposite side, which is really cool and a design feature I like a lot.  Can't wait for the Alox ones to hit the U.S.!
