The boy's first SAK
on: November 02, 2013, 03:55:15 PM
I had to get it from Germany, but I think it's the prefect choice for a 13 year-old boy.

His birthday is in a few weeks, so I get to play with it for awhile :D

It's a really nice SAK, and has a great tool-set for a a 13 year-old boy.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Yes, that is a fine choice. Too bad those models are unobtainable here.

Thats how old I was when I got my first SAK too.  It was a champion.  I thought it was magic how many things it could do. :D  Never cut myself with the blade, but that saw did some damage on my hand once.  They are more dangerous then the knife blade.

I was six when I got my first SAK, a '51 soldier of course. It was time to go to school and be a man and according to my granddad that required me to carry a SAK ;).

So was I.

But I had to make a judgment call based on the boy's maturity and sense of responsibility, which is low for his age. The ex-wife has primary custody, and therefore the most influence on him.

Very cool gift. :tu: I had to buy myself my first real SAK. Got lots of slip joints from my grandfather though from the age of 6-7 or so onwards.

So did it come from ebay or Amazon?

Either way, I'm glad you got what you were looking for. Things are always a bit special when you've had to cross oceans to get them.

Kids, play nice, or I'll let the fugly man out. :fugly:

For a boy that age a saw is a must have, especially if he lives on a farm or near the woods. I know I used mine a lot.

Times have changed.

When my granddad was 12, he was allowed to carry a .22 rifle. (farmer's son)

When my dad was 12, he was allowed to carry a BB gun. (machinist's son)

When I was 12, I was allowed to carry a SAK. (draftsman's son)

Mine first was a Mountaineer and I was 7. I still got it and is in pretty great shape, even though it's 27 years old and had lots of use. I treat it really well though. It's a gem, and a present from my dad.

I recently came across this blog post should anyonw be interested - about introducing kids to knives. Since I have a son myself, I started asking myself these questions.... WHEN?

http://thenewartemis.com/2013/06/25/how-to-introduce-your-child-to-pocket-knives/

I wrote my history on their FB page - comments. YOu guys could leave yours.

BTW the Wenger you got is amazing and will make your kid EXTREMELY HAPPY and fullfilled. It's a better breed of Vic Explorer, IMO.

I don't recall what model it was but I got my first sak for Christmas in 92 or 93 (I was 8 or 9 at the time). I opened up the main blade and cut my middle finger pretty good. I took the knife over to my dad and showed him my newly acquired cut. It bled pretty good!
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I got my first SAK aged 6, I didn't cause any major injuries despite it being used regularly. I still have it aged 23.

There are people my age I'd worry about having a Classic, there are being my age I'd quite happily let shoot apples off the top of my head.

Horses for course, I don't like the rounded tip knives but I like them being available.

I just picked one up as well.  The only downside is that it is rather thick.  The saw is rather unnecessary IMO, as are the evo scales (I had them changed to classic).  If we are going into the woods, the boy will get a proper Farmer!
Lurking with a large collection of sharp knives!
