Confession time- Who's game??
on: January 08, 2014, 10:51:58 PM
I know I'm not alone here. But how many of you lot have gone overboard on the Wengers since hearing the news of their demise.
I know I've gone way, way OTT this time!!

So, come on Who's game. We don't need a fiigure as to how much you've spent - cos' I'm sure as hell not revealing how much I have. :ahhh

But, how many have you added??

I'll start...ahem
September my Wenger count was somewhere between 30-40. Three months later and we're into three fiqures..........I think

I dare not count up!!
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I had previously bought the ones I wanted (Minathor, Business Tool, S557, Large Mountain Bike, Swiss Grip, MiniGrip, Rangers).  I may go a bit crazy if the Alox comes to an end, however. :-\

Three or four, but I passed one along in the Christmas Pool just past. Like to get another Evo16, but it'd have to be at the right price

I have one and I am having a hard time justifying the purchase of another. Victorinox has them well and truly thrashed, price wise.

Well, you certainly picked a good start. If I were to pick just one (not counting the collectors pieces) it would undoubtably be the SI. :tu:

The ones I'd like? Deer, Double Blade, Windjammer, Gawain (most of the Dynasties, actually), Wengerinox ones with Suisse crossbow schield, Pocketgrip, ...

I'm a bargain hunter though. And a very patient one. :D I can wait, a cheap, good condition one will turn up sooner or later.

I just ordered two the other day from Felinevet, a Wenger Handyman and Ranger 58. The handyman because I'm still looking for a possible small EDC from that line, and the Ranger to test the saw.

I didn't really feel a push to buy because of the end of the brand. I'm happy to hear Vic is carrying on with some of the lines, but it honestly doesn't affect me one way or the other.

If I had the money, I would buy 10 of them!!
I predict they will become unbelievably collectible in a few years time!!

Just wait and see, we'll all be kicking ourselves  :ahhh

I had all the ones I wanted previously. I did buy that Wooden set because Tosh told me about it and I liked it. To be honest, I didn't even know it existed until Tosh told me about it. I just got 3 more Wengers in the door...but I got them because they caught my attention...not because Wenger is being consumed by Victorinox.

Re: Confession time- Who's game?? - Who went mad buying Wengers?
Reply #22 on: January 09, 2014, 03:52:31 AM
Yep

I only started collecting SAKs last year and had never even heard of Wenger!!
Apart from noticing occasionally that there were SAKs with a different kind of a cross...
I had always carried a Viccy Huntsman for years
So my count was zero - But I discovered Wenger and immediately 'fell in love' with them.

I am vey sad about the demise of Wenger - Although economically, and in business terms, it makes complete sense.
There was too much overlap between the product lines which resulted in some confusion with buyers/owners in the general public and the two brands competing against each other.
Confusion does not apply, of course, to enthiusiasts like us.
Although Wenger branding themselves for outdoor enthusiasts was a good move I think and resulted in some nice product developments.
Anyway hopefully a lot of what is good, original, quirky, unusual about Wenger will continue in the new Viccy 'Wengers' - I really hope the Viccy management team keep the Wenger product design/development team and allow them some creative freedom.

I would say my whole SAK collecting bug for was started somewhat by the Wenger demise.
Like you Tosh I wanted to get them before they are gone forever.

So finally the confession.
Count is now at 18 including Swiss Bucks - About 10 of them are new
PLUS ..... I could not resist Wenger's Swansong  8) :D

And what a beautiful set of tools it is......

I've had the MT.o 7th Ann Wenger for a while, but I now have 3 Wenger Soldats, and 5 SI's.

The only Wengers I own are two--a vintage (40's) Tahara and an '04 SI.  I'm not a collector, really.  I only buy knives I would use (not that I use them all).  Buying them is not a means to make a profit, though appreciating value is a secondary perk.

Those two are the only Wengers I would use.  Victorinox has always had Wenger trumped in quality and usefulness, IMO, at least for the last 30-40 years.  I've owned a few others in the past, but sold them because I never was satisfied with them.

I have 7 or 8 Wengers, I think. The only one I have bought within the last year is the Evo Waiter. Not sure what number it is, just that it looks like a Waiter. Otherwise, no, nothing stands out, other than that Wenger with the toilet paper dispenser key implement of Def's that he showed off a few years ago.

I have a few floating around - Mostly aquired out of curiosity (Minigrip, anyone?) or to test out a concept against another (Rangers vs. 111 Vic).
I came to realize that the 85 mm range might have a few very nice EDC candidates only lately and am thinking about getting one or another 2 or 3 layer.

Most of the Wengers (just like most Vic´s or LM´s) leave me after I had my play or test with them, as I would not call myself a collector.
That my wife would call me one is on another page and totally Kirk´s fault, though. ;-)
I don´t buy or sell them for profit, especially not here, as I`d rather pass them on at a fair price to give them a good home. Although sometimes one knife of a lot or set I bought pays for the one I keep when I sell them on the bay.

It´s sad to see a brand with such a history and the balls to make something like the Business Tool is going, but I can understand Vic´s decision and I´d rather have one remaining brand keeping on than having Wenger pulling Vic down and being left without the two of them.
