SwissFlame - no fire
on: January 12, 2014, 06:27:15 PM
Hi guys,

Some time ago i bought a SwissFlame as a souvenir. It didn't light at the time, but the vendor told me that was because there was no gas in it. Took it home, filled it up but still no fire. Guess i just got some bad luck there, but still have the souvenir-value :-)

Anyway, is there anything i can do to get a flame out of it. I checked and the blue spark is still working, so it's a gasflow problem.
Any tips would be welcome.

Welcome to the forum  :tu:

As far as I know - the Vic butane lighters are notorious for failing to work. I'm sure that was one of the major reasons why Victorinox decided to drop the line.

However, take pleasure in realising that you will be making many many members here turning a lovely shade of green through sheer envy!!

You're a lucky guy - make no mistake

The best way to checking you've got an authentic Victorinox Swissflame or a cheap Chinese fake is to click the burner-button a few times.

If nothing happens it's the real deal. If you see a flame of any kind, it's not Kosher...

There is a used one at 260 right now on the bay...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Victorinox-Swiss-Flame-Swiss-Army-Knife-/181297611647?pt=Collectible_Knives&hash=item2a362e037f

Is that the one that sat at $150 for a week with no takers, in the for sale section here?

The thing with the butane's is they're one of a kind. Added to that, the production run was very short. I don't know how many were made, or how many have been lost, forgotten, busted etc etc. But I figure anyone holding these in years to come can expect a better return than what they paid for it.

Perish the thought that I had to sell off my collection, the 3 Vic butanes would be the very last to go.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

The most recent one on eBay sold for $260 by a member here. Good for him, his timing was good as there haven't been many for sale in a while. These go in waves - everyone sees one sell for $260, they dump a bunch on eBay, and they settle down to their typical prices of about $125. If you're looking for one, best bet is find someone in Europe who'll ship to the US. They sell for considerably less in Europe (where they were sold) than in the US.

I just sold my Swiss Flame on E-Bay tonight.  It ships tomorrow (with the other two I sold).

I listed it for $100.  It sold for $260 to someone from Quebec, Canada.

I think I paid around $50 for it in South Korea back in 2009.

It NEVER worked.   The electronic sparking mechanism worked when I would pull the lever.  I filled it, worked it, it NEVER WORKED.  No wonder they were made only from 2003-2006 timeframe.  It is a POS, frankly.  An overly-large Climber with Plus scales if you ask me.

No regrets on selling it.  I need the $$$ for other projects.

The other knives I formerly listed here, but listed on E-Bay:
Outdoorsman I had listed: sold to Australian buyer for @$48 U.S.
Motorist I had listed: sold to a buyer in FL for @$24 U.S.

Yep that was mine!!!  Sitting on kitchen bar-table with shipping label ready for shipment to Canada tomorrow!!!

This was my first experience selling anything at all on E-Bay.   Thank the Lord someone out bid the Chinese buyers.  I cannot ship to China from the US.  Weapons (including knives) are restricted to ship from USA to China (among other things).  I warned the bidders from China, yet they still bid, regardless of PMs sent, or stating as such in my ad (ship only to Canada, USA).

Listing as shipping the United States, Canada.

The buyer registered under eBay China might have an USA address, otherwise he couldn't bid to the auction.

Blue SwissFlame and red CampFlame. Both worked until they ran out of fuel.

I'd be willing to do a straight up trade for a Climber Plus and a Bic lighter, if that would make you feel better.  I'll even through in one free replacement for the Bic... >:D :D

What causes these lighters to die? Can they be disassembled and repaired? I know how the coast lighter knives fail (the ones that are a copy of the Wenger handyman) - a brittle nylon fuel tank cracks with age. But it sounds like the Swiss flame still holds butane, but doesn’t fire? That sounds like something fixable, if you can get to the innards.

Charles.

The nozzles are made way too precise, causing dirt particles in natural gas to clutter the nozzle.

I've read one day that someone managed to repair the lighter by putting it in an ultrasonic cleaner. It did, however, cause the gaskets to leak. So the lighter didn't hold gas in it's tank for more than a few minutes and was therefore just as useless as before.

The gaskets should just be little o-rings. Are they all accessible? Can it be disassembled?

Charles.
