How hot do you bake your MT.
on: January 23, 2014, 05:03:25 AM
Quick question guys. After cleaning A MT I normally hit it with the air compressor and then let it sit in the hot sun for a while to get any moister out that is left in the pivots or hard to get to areas. Instead of doing that I have heard of many people putting the MT in the oven to achieve the same effect. My question is how hot to you set your oven when doing this. Obviously this should only be done with MT's that are 100% metal. Thanks everyone.

I just tore apart a Gerber MP600, and had just read about the over-bake idea.

I preheated my oven to 200F, then turned it off and stuck the parts in on a cookie sheet for about ten minutes.

Yes, including the main body of the MT600 with the plastic lock tabs.

It seemed to do a fine job of drying it, and no problem with the plastic.

I haven't baked any MTs myself, but since water boils at 212 deg. F, any temperature above that should guarantee no liquid water remains.  Going much hotter doesn't seem to offer any clear benefit and may pose unnecessary risk to the MT.  So, I suppose I would set my oven to about 220.

I haven't tried the oven either. I usually let it sit in a bag of rice overnight.

I dont know the specifics, and this might not be accurate (it'd be awesome if someone could confirm/deny), but the temperature should apparently be no higher than the temperature of annealing. Someone (on a knife forum) mentioned a temperature of 200C (392F) as the temperature a given knife was annealed to.

So... yeah, not above 375F. :D

Also, I consulted my Betty Crocker cookbook, which USUALLY has bake time and temp for EVERYTHING. Strangely, not mention of MTs. It seems odd in its absence.

I wouldn't go that high, personally.  Water begins evaporating long before reaching boiling temperature, especially in the dry heat of an oven.

I used to dry drowned cell phones out in the oven at 170-190 degrees.  That range should easily be sufficient for MTs.

Just cleaned up a Sidekick, BO Swisstool, and a Mr. Pinchy, but it should be nice enough today to do a sun dry. There getting a tan right now. I might try the oven next time.  :tu:

I’ve used a hairdryer. I’m sure an oven set @200F would also work.

On a related note, Soaking and scrubbing an MT in odorless mineral spirits is also a good way to clean them while also displacing any water.  Soak the MT , take it out, let it dry, and then
