Witch Leatherman to buy??
on: May 27, 2008, 03:51:27 AM
I'm considering to buy a LM but not sure of witch one. It's either a Wave or Fuse.

How are the BO finish on LM compared to SOG's BO finish?
I'm leaning more for the Wave (that's one sexy locking tool ) but there's just something that's draws my attention to the Fuse.

Any comments and advise would be nice since I'm not that experienced with LM

If you don't need a file or saw the fuse is one tough tool, but the last poll that came out the wave was voted 10 to 2 in favor, don't know much about the BO finish, but a lot of people like it,good luck on what ever you get,but if your anything like the rest of us you will end up with both of them, and then some!!!!!

HA-HA. Let me recite my bank statement.
"You're broke" and my answer to that is "MasterCard"

My girlfriend after I told here I had ordered a SOG Powerlock whilst I was playing with the Paratool " Do you really need that?" My reply to here "Of course I need that." What a strange question?

Did you say "witch" one?

It's not Halloween is it?? >:D

I don't have any experience with the BO LM tools, but Spoonrobot posted some pics of his BO Fuse and I must say, they really looked great! Maybe he'll chime in and give us some input.

I have both and my vote is for the Wave and get the accessory pocket clip.

I really like the black oxide. You will get some black dust on your hands when you first start using them, but this is normal.

I EDC'd a black oxide Blast for quite a long time. It's a very good tool and compares well to the Wave, I prefered the Blast because of the slimmer profile and the lack of a serrated blade. Look at the Blast instead of the Fuse, it makes a better comparison since they have almost the same tool loadout.

I can't really compare the finishes because the only BO SOG parts I have are a saw and scissors but they do look pretty similar. Both are flat finishes and hold up to wear very well. Leathermans do seem to eat grease more than the SOG implements. That is, after a few weeks of use the Leatherman finish appears to become a sort of shiny/matte finish but once cleaned thoroughly it returns to it's flat luster. I noted this on all four of my BO Leathermans.

Ignore the chipping on the scales of the Charge. Apparently the titanium scales were painted black and this is not indicative of the oxide coating.

Functionally (for me) the Blast and the Wave are the same. The implements are the same and the locks are similar in function and strength the deciding factor for you should be the one-hand opening and the overall size. The Blast does not feature the former but is slimmer and less angular in the pocket and during use. I prefer the Blast, it's more of the updated old-school motif I like.

OTOH, the Wave does have a diamond file.

Ok, think I will go for the Wave and a little later bye the Blast. Butt then it's the big question. To BO, or not BO.

Go Black Oxide.

The price difference is negligible and it's a much harder to find that finish when the tool is out of production. It also looks really cool as it accrues wear over the life of the tool.

Just tell her that for every pair of shoes she buys you need a multitool.  One for each of you outfits so you can have matching tools.

Agreed.  I recently bought a Wave and a day later wanted to sell it and get the Charge TTi instead. Loved everything about the Wave except for the fact that using the pliers was quite uncomfortable. The edges of those main blade "pockets" really dug into my upper mid-finger when working the pliers (even after the pliers had loosened). The thicker, rounder scales on the Charge did away with most of that discomfort.

Sure it's more expensive, but it looks sooooo sexy  :P . Plus you get the fancier knife blade, the cutting hook, belt clip and a basic bit kit.

BTW Medic, if you do get the Wave or the Charge, get it with the NYLON sheath, not the "leather!"

To be honest. I think that the Wave is more good looking than the Charge TTI, and the price is to high for me at the moment, the Charge will probably be a nice birthday gift ore something in the future. I have made up my mind and will go for the Wave without the BO finish.

Thanks fore the input guys and I appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

If I absolutely had to buy a Leatherman (in addition to my Juice [I still love you, Juice!  :climber:]), it would definitely be a Blast. Best fitting tool I've ever held. That's just me and my girly hands, though.

Get yourself a nice Black Oxide Wave, you can get BO tools from here:

They have the Black Oxide Pocket clip too!
Enjoy!

I'd shoot for a BO Wave. It has one handed blades and is just a lot "cooler".

Ok but now the question on your choice of the wave without the BO. Are you getting the new Wave, Old wave, or the older wave?

I very small difference really. The newer Old Waves have the grooves on the back of the serrated blade. Oh, and the end bolsters are smooth while on the old Wave they are rough.

That also is a nonprofit charity corporation that hits me right in the heart. As a cat lover and a former cat owner I will herby buy all my MT (if they have them) from this place. Great prices when compared to the prices in Norway (240$ or 122£ or 153€ for a Wave), the money goes to a good cause and a GREAT excuse for buying a MT or SAK
