Water purification is my need for fire.  I can deal with everything else with just a knife.   I could do the bow drill method, but that is exhausting.

First off, for the bow-drill method you would need string, not that easy to come by.

I had a firebyrd.  The blade is absolute feces.  Won't hold an edge, dulls quickly, and got loose after a week of use.

BTW, are you told in advance in what kind of klimate or exact place you'd be dropped of when preparing for the trip?

How close would they inspect the swiss army knife? I can think of a few ways to hide firesteel in one.  Inside a hollow scale would be undetectable.  Hollow out some liner space... replace the toothpick or pen... I think under the saw layer there is even enough room to put a thin one.  Thats the route Id go.. but start with a larger 111mm size SAK, since the blade is bigger to start with... hmm.. this has the mental wheels turning, let me see what I can come up with.   I would much rather have firesteel than the vic lighter, its horrible.

Heck you could just take a cybertool 34 or 41 and replace the screwdriver bits with firesteel, but that might look obvious if inspected.

The little firesteel is 0.150" thick and that would fit inside the plastic scale no problem.

unless thats considered cheating thats what I would do.  Pop off a scale, hollow out a spot, put fire steel in there.  Then when your in the field, just pop that scale back off to retrieve.

I think I'd be  linclined to go with Mr Whippys idea.
The Tool logic with built in fire steel is great, plus I'm almost certain that the knife handle keeps the fire steel dry.

Cheap as chips and works a treat. And the blade is decent and locks!!

I think they've thinned out some of their models though, I can recall one or two similar to the one's I linked too with a full plain edge. I'll see if i can find any any on ebay/amazon.

They also used to sell the firesteel/flashlight items separately so you could change them out if you find a knife with a plain edge but the wrong tool option.

EDIT: They also currently make this one with a plain edge & firesteel but no whistle or option to change out the firesteel for one of the combo units.

If a dismountable firesteel is allowed, you could go with a Mora Bushcraft Survival (http://www.moraofsweden.se/adventure/bushcraft-survival-orange) or the Light My Fire Swedish Fireknive (http://www.lightmyfire.com/products/products/swedish-fireknife.aspx). This depends of course on it being allowed by the producers!
Or you go all-in with a Buckmaster 184 with a firesteel in the handle

The original Schrade Navitool was made in the US and pretty decent. The current version is made in China and is poor.

Had one of the originals, but got ride of it during a move. Ordered out a new one a year or so back to throw in the emergency kit in the trunk. It struck me as being so flimsy I sent it back. Have no use experience with it.

I was thinking lanyard, You can get 36" of paracord into a pretty small lanyard, or...Since he is naked.....a neck lanyard.
