Evolution of the Explorer layers configuration ?
« on: March 26, 2021, 09:21:53 AM »
Hi all,

I was sorting out some sak and I've been struck by something that I've never pay attention...

The two "grey magnifier" explorers have a different configuration... The scissor and mag/phillips layers are switched! And there is a big bushing around the middle brass pin...

Anyone with an explanation? I'm 100% sure that they are not modded...

Some pics:

I have no idea when or why the change happened. But it is interesting!
The SwissBianco version of the Yeoman has a different layer order as well, I believe.

You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

Nobody can explain why it was changed, but many collectors noticed that fact.
The same is true for me

I've also noticed it as well.  Interesting for sure but why  :dunno:

If I had to guess, I'd say it was to make the phillips and magnifying glass easier to deploy. If they're right against the main blade, the height of the blade makes it hard to get your nail around the grooves to pull out the mag. or phillips.

The scissors have the nail groove next to the base of the main blade where it's nearly flush with the scales so there's no interference with this arrangement.

The ‘normal’ or at least most typical layout for the Explorer is with the magnifier/phillips layer next to the openers. It is also the original order from 1973:

1973 Explorer

The spacer/collar on the 4th pin is used in that layer from ‘81-‘86. The OP’s knife appears to be from ‘83, from what I can see and would expect it to have the non-beveled bezel and no eyelet on the awl and for there to be no tip grind on the awl. If it doesn’t have the beveled bezel, then it’s probably ‘84.

The other Explorer is ‘00/‘01.

Passenger looks nice and I’m wondering if it’s an Alpineer?

But the Yeoman looks a bit odd to me and wouldn’t think it’s original. I’m not familiar with the ones in this arrangement...though the ‘construction’ doesn’t seem correct to me.

I’m not sure why they used this ‘intermediate’ arrangement. But I believe it was short lived for the reasons Altis mentions above.

More pictures would help to confirm my date estimates and maybe the suspicions about the Yeoman.

Sorry, I've missed the answers from my initial post.

The passenger is a passenger, I'll join a few more pics

And yes, the Yeoman is a mod that I've made a few months ago. I've been trying the "original" yeoman layer order and I wasnt pleased with it :)

And the Explorer:

Still looks like ‘83 to me. Magnifier doesn’t have the bevel? Can you show both sides please?

Passenger seems to have the wrong tweezer. Also seems like it should have the non beveled magnifier. I’m thinking late ‘80 if it doesn’t have the collar. ‘81+ if it does. Could use more pics with tools open.

Not surprised the Yeoman is a mod. Are you certain about the others? Some maybe re-scaled?
