Old 84mm Swiss Knife - Scissor Spring
on: June 20, 2014, 02:39:00 AM
I saw this in one of the ebay listings...

Is the scissor spring out of place? I thought during the time this SAK was manufactured Vic was using the single spring.

maybe repaired?

Also, the can opener's on the "wrong" side ???
I have a similar knife, similar vintage, that I just rebuilt/renovated. I mistakenly applied logic when rebuilding the blade order. Took me several tries before I realized that I needed to assemble as per the nail-nick reliefs in the liners.......not as it makes sense to assemble (ie: like a "modern" Vic)

The spring is modern, in a vintage knife. Also, whoever installed that spring had to severely manipulate the end of it (the end that locates it in the scissor) to make it actually fit. The modern spring fits into a much larger diameter hole than is present on those scissors. It can be done, but it's a fiddly job.

My spring kit had 2 large spring sizes. One for a big hole and one for a small hole. The small one fits in all 84's I have tried it in. The spring kit has 5 different sizes in it.

I think the 84 and the 91 are the same.

Ignoring the old single leaf springs there are four sizes.

Small for 58mm, large for modern 91mm; but there are also specific springs for 74mm and a different size again for 84mm and old 91mm.  Most stores will only carry small and large as that is all they are likely ever to be asked for. Also the large spring can be made to fit 84mm with tweaking.

Ah ok. I was thinking of buying an old 74mm with a single spring and using it for my 84mm golfer that lost its spring. Do you think it will work?

I checked my ambassador and the small loop is still larger compared to the loop hole of the 84mm Golfer. Is there a way to make that smaller easily (any techniques?).

New 91 mm scissors and pliers I use the one on the right. Old 91mm and 84mm scissors with the small hole I use either of the 2 on the left. Either with the small hole both springs drop right in. No reshaping required.

Little expensive?

I just squeezed the loop of a modern spring with pliers, scrunching it a little bit, and then it pressed into the smaller hole of an older scissors OK.

Yes, I've successfully done it twice, and got a perfect fit.
I used a Dremel, with a very thin sanding disk (the flexible sandpaper disk type), and used it to grind just a bit off of the tight curl of the spring. I then very carefully squeezed the curl tighter with pliers till it just fit into the scissor tang.
Go very carefully with that last step: a false move and you will close the spring curl down too much, it won't fit into the tang well, and may be very difficult to open back up again.
