How many Giants??
on: February 21, 2014, 05:34:40 PM
Now Wenger's gone.

I'm curious how many Giants were actually produced - does anyone have an estimate??

Is there a production count available on any of the models??

I realise there are serial numbers - but do they take into account the different scales used on same models. The Ranger 55 seems to have more scale options than any of the other models in the Ranger series.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

You're looking at the how many individual tools were produced, right? That could be a hard one. Don't remember ever seeing that data. I do think I saw somewhere that there were two different versions of it if I remember correctly. Blunt and sharp maybe? I'm sure someone will know.

Thanks enki

As far as I'm aware the blunt versions you speak of were for shop displays?? Or so I've read. Supposedly to reduce the risk of injury claims. My guess is they'll become quite sought after.
Wasn't the Giant released to celebrate Wenger's 100th anniversary??

There were more versions than just two; over the years, the actual tool layout has varied.  I didn't realize any of the Giants actually came with sharp main blades, though.

Ya I thought each years giant was different than the last?  It was suppose to be made up of every tool that was offered for that year.  Not sure how many different versions that equates to.

I think I remember someone cutting themselves with theirs. Maybe Bob.

Some Giants (most I believe) come with fully sharpened blades.

As other have said there are Giants with Tool variations, but how many variations; I don't thing we know that yet.  Some people on this forum have at least two Giant variations, and I think a third has been confirmed (not counting the unsharpened blade versions).

Looking at old down-loaded images, there appear to be at least three major versions of the Giant. The first (?) used all 85mm tools. The second added the folding nail clipper. The third was done after some of the original tools, such as the telescoping pointer and whistle, were no longer available; and substituted tools from the 65mm series. My understanding is that the Giants were done in small batches, and there may be other difference between batches such as tool order.

Looking closer at the images I have the photo of the Giant without the nail clipper may be the result of careless cropping.

Third (?) version without pointer and whistle, and with 65mm tools.

You might find this article/interview interesting.

Interesting article. A 120mm giant knife would be cool, I wonder what the prototype of one looked like

Now that is interesting..
I say this because I contacted wenger late last year to request such a build. I was more than happy to pay for it. However I never received a reply. I'm guessing the article now confirms that the Ranger Giant does in fact exist.

What would I give to get my hands on that!!, along with the ultra rare Alinghi model handed out to the Alinghi Crew members ... :ahhh :ahhh

What I found most interesting amongst the Ranger series is the blunt serrated blade found only on the Mike Horn model.  It only appeared on this one model. So were I to request such a build here amongst the modders, the cost is immediately hiked due to that one very unique blade. - I did seriously consider asking several members here on the forum, but it would never have been a Genuine Wenger and that was what I really wanted.
A custom built Ranger Giant by Wenger...

Just to clarify.
I was actually interested to know how many Giants had ever been built. But I love the way this topic is moving - without doubt the Giant unless replicated by Victorinox will become iconic, just you wait and see :pok:

Oooh, a 120mm Giant, now that is an exciting idea! I'm not real familiar with all of the Wenger 120mm knives though.....are there enough various different components to build a "Giant" sized tool? ???
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Well there ware both 85mm (Everest/Ranger04) and 120/130 mm pliers (Electrician/NewRanger 73) integrated into the larger frame. Don't remember a model with 85mm scissors but that doesn't mean there never was one.

Also the long inline flat head screwdriver like on the 38-38 and 38-36.
