The never ending Addiction...
on: March 03, 2014, 07:01:02 PM
I used to be quite active in the KnifeForums area and to a lesser extent here.  However for a long time I haven't really posted.  And in fact for a long time I really wasn't even looking at my collection much or doing anything with it.

The only reason I came back was to get some information on some items that I was selling from my collection.  I have a number of items that aren't really in my "theme" area and decided to move them to purchase another gadget that I wanted.  But of course, no sooner do I start looking around here and I'm hooked.  Now I'm searching through eBay to find items that I want to ADD to my collection!

This crap is more addicting than crack!  Ugh!

I know what you mean!
For 20 years I only owned one SAK (a Spartan), 6 months ago I decided to upgrade to a newer model, since then I've bought 8! 7 new Vics & a Wenger.   :ahhh

You are not alone.

I tend to leave and come back here at times too.  I came back a couple of months ago after a long absence with the same intention--to "thin out the herd", so to speak.  It turns out in that time I've spent a whole lot of money and not sold a thing.

I think that is part of the collecting cycle. I to also go with periods where I won't buy anything, and nothing is added...and then in spurts I go on a mini buying spree.

I got the bug myself...  I went 35 years wanting, but never buying a SAK.  Last autumn, I picked up an Explorer to get free shipping on another order of stuff, then it began.
Next I found the CyberTool series...
Then, over the course of 2 months, I picked up 15 or so SAK's.  Gave away 6 as Christmas gifts.

It is an addiction...    :climber:

Definitely very addictive.

Started with a Charge XTi given as a gift. Was fine with that for many years. Then I found MT.O and it just spiraled from there. :D

Well at least this addiction won't leave you toothless and penniless in a ditch, or it shouldn't. In fact, other than internet/eBay time you become a more productive member of society and could be.more prepared to save someone in the event it becomes necessary. And you are stockpiling heirlooms for le kids.

It is a virtuous cycle!

I came to MT.O as a huge fan (and thereby collector) of Leatherman tools.  now it is MTs, SAKs, and to add to it G-shock watches, slip-joint knives, folders, etc.

oh well, it is fun
If I can help, let me know

My addiction is mostly to white cross pioneers and a few associated items, and I try to keep my prices lowish, but I did just spring for a premium birth year soldier. Maybe all is now lost!

Why to collect SAKs:

- They are an outstanding example of industrial design.
- They are well made.
- They are reasonably priced (normally).
- They are not fragile.
- They don't take up a lot of space.
- They don't smell up the house.
- There are a tremendous variety of them.
- What ever their value as a collectible, they will always have utility value as a tool.
- They place you in the select company of an intelligent, adaptable, and altogether admirable cognoscenti.
- They are NEAT.

There's no doubt about it. SAKs & MTs  are very very addictive.
I fear I'm  going to have to force myself away pretty soon. Love this place as much as I do, you guys are a serious bunch of enablers  :pok:

But I couldn't have spent the past 2yrs anywhere better! :tu:
What a fantastic community we have here.
However, I've gotten to the stage where I've realised I'm passed collecting  and have somehow descended into a hoader    :ahhh

Of course its not my fault…........never was!
I place the blame with you guys  :D

I am with all of you. My addiction happens to be stag and horn handled SAKs, which are always very expensive. I fervently seek them out then buy up all in can that seem reasonably priced, which is still many times more than the equivalent in cellidor.

Oh well! I don't golf, boat, hardly drink, and have no drug addictions. Also, I can always sell my knives in the future and recoup some, if not all of the money.

Yes...that is what I will tell myself

This is a very funny post - in a tragicomic way -
There is no hope for us......

I know what you mean!
For 20 years I only owned one SAK (a Spartan), 6 months ago I decided to upgrade to a newer model, since then I've bought 8! 7 new Vics & a Wenger.   :ahhh

Hi Daverobson - That is so funny - This is my story - Except it was a year and a half ago and the total I now own is scary - Let's say it's over 50.
I went Wenger mad when first I discovered them, then heard of their demise, of course with a good few Vics thrown in as well.
Thankfully the spending spree has waned somewhat (just like you said Chako)
Just worried it's going to start up again  >:D

Why to collect SAKs:
-...
- They place you in the select company of an intelligent, adaptable, and altogether admirable cognoscenti.
- ........
Yes I agree with all of this especially the second to last

I had Two SAKs, a big fat Wenger that I had since I was a kid and a white 91mm Golfer that I bought in Interlaken on my Honeymoon in 1989.
I found this place while searching for info on the old Wenger and the rest is history.

Stop whining that you now have a dozen SAKs. :twak: You got off light ... I have TEN TIMES that many now... LITERALLY
(NOTE: the above is VERY tongue in cheek, not nasty)

It has been my experience that the more saks you have the more inertia and momentum you have to get more.

You have been warned.

That about sums it up for sure ColoSwiss. I was thinking about how badly my cheese collection smells up the house. :tu:

Seriously, most collections also don't require an extra room or warehouse either, well most of us I think...

To OP, coming to MT.O to 'thin out the herd' is like going to bar to get sober, it just ain't going to happen.  :drink:

And I used to think I must be crazy hoarding and buying, but whenever I felt like that, I just take a look at everyone's collection here or collection subforum, I felt altogether better and just kept on my usual hoarding/buying. :D

Ya come on people collect all kinds of things, at least SAKs have a use and purpose.  I could be wrong but I think Id do better in a zombie apocalypse with my collection vs the lady with the beanie babies.  :D

The way I see it, collecting gives some joy in life.  Some kinds I dont understand like stamp collecting, but if you get joy out of it great.  But collecting tools and knives just seems good to me.  If you buy 'collectable' SAKs they hold their value pretty well too if you decided to sell off the collection later.

I really like this point, and one of the things I think that makes SAK collection so much fun.  Because there are such a variety everyone's collection can vary quite a bit.

For example, I'm a 58mm collector.  This is something that many people aren't into as a collection item, but for me it works.  And even if others aren't into the 58mm much, they still can see my collection and appreciate it.

Likewise for people who collect things that I'm not as into, I still see what they have a drool over it.

I also like it is possible to complete your collection .... as long as you have reasonable parameters.

My collection was all numbered knifes from 1921 to the end of alox 2008 few months ago got my 1958 to complete the collection :)

done ......

Complete .......

Addiction over  ..........

mmmmm Just seen a mint 1922 and mine has a crack round the pins on one of the scales ........Damn it ..... ok maybe I just need to replace a few of the knives before the collection is completely complete .... but I am not addicted  .... Just need 1 or 2 more knives then I stop  ..... Well obviously I will still buy 75mm knives but that is not really a collection I have less than 30 ... but that's it .....apart from anything with exposed rivets ...... or anything rare or  under-priced ..... or with an interesting Tang stamp ..... but I will be buying no more Spartans that have been produced in the last few years ..... well unless it has an interesting scale design .........

That is so funny Jaydar - And a wonderful sense of irony - which I thought was more of a British humorous trait!!

I went SAK mad last year - The number of times I told myself I had finished, and I had not!
But I have to say I have been very good for the last three months....
SAK collection parameters .....
* Done ....
* Complete ......
* .........

But .... then I just started on one or two Leathermans.

That's the beauty - You can always redefine the parameters...

Note the expression missing in * above....

.....The addiction is never over

After a few months of halfway furious buying and then a weekend of furious buying, I think I am content for a bit- I have hit all my goals and then some.  Plus the deals I was seeing last year are no longer available, too many people are hunting and pricing things up and up.  So I find I am checking the normal places less and less.

But then again, I now have 5 or 6 people asking me to get them somewhat undefined Year of X in undefined numbers so that may be enough hunting and buying for me.  At around $75 a pop including shipping, I don't think I have enough petty cash for all these, lol. When someone says "Yeah, and I'd like all of them except these 3, and I can only afford 1 or 2 at a time," I am a bit unsure how to go forward.  Esp is they only have three posts.  But if someone is in the No Life Club (like me) at least I know they can handle the heat!
