Ignite lighters- anyone heard of these?
on: March 09, 2014, 02:09:50 AM
I went to the Sports & RV show today and while there wasn't a lot new or exciting I did pick up something interesting- it's called the Ignite Elektra and it's a USB rechargeable lighter.

Basically it's a small electric heating element and a lithium battery.  You charge the battery in a USB port and supposedly it's good for a hundred or so "ignitions.". There's no open flame as with other lighters but so far I have been able to light candles and paper with it so there is some potential there.

I'll post some pics eventually but in the meantime you can look them up at www.ignitelighters.com to see what they are all about.

My initial impressions are that it is a neat concept but I am wondering whether it will work as well as a regular lighter for most non-cigarette lighter duties.  As an occasional cigar smoker I have noticed that the small opening is likely too small for most stogies, and candles in jars are somewhat out of reach for it as well.

Still, it's an interesting concept and I did manage to use it to light the candles on my wife's birthday cake this evening, so it is functional.

Anyone else got any experience with these?

Yes, but why?  And do you really?  What are you specifically needing the flame for?

I really like jet flame lighters but this one does work pretty well so far for the things I want it to do.

I have two USB ports in the Jeep, several plug in USB chargers that plug into a wall and my laptop has several as well.  USB ports seem to be everywhere these days.  I'm kind of amazed that you don't have any anywhere!

I know i'm surprised too. My laptop was the only USB port I had and once it crapped out I was left with none. I really did not think about it until I read this thread, but I guess i'm getting along fine without a USB port of any kind.

They have these at the Walmarts around here. I thought about picking one up, but it's just another thing I have to worry about charging. Very cool idea. I just wish the burner was on the end of a wand maybe. It would make it more usable in my opinion.

So, isn't this just a portable, rechargeable car-cigarette lighter? You know, the ones that go in the 12v outlet?

It seems to be based on the same principle. I'm far from being a smoker but always have a lighter with me, for the odd paracord project (and for the ladies, of course... :D) The thing with car-type lighters is that they usually melt paracord and get all messy and gunky (don't ask... ::)). I wonder if these lighters are any different/better. BTW I should have probably mentioned this before asking Grant to try it out. Oops... :-[ :D

Good timing!  :P

It does a great job on the paracord, but leaves the lighter kinda messy.  I'll post photos in a few moments.

That's what came to my mind as well.  :)

I can see one of these replacing a standard flame for a lot of applications, but not all.  I do suspect it'll get very smelly and gunked up from paracord work, and I think it would be a sod to try and light a camp fire with it, but if it's just for smokes and candles I think it looks just fine.  Bonus is that they don't see silly expensive so it's no big loss if it doesn't work out.

It was a whopping $10, so no great loss if it does crap out on me.

Here are the photos of the paracord attempt.

I trimmed off the internal strings first.

The end result is actually quite neat.

The lighter isn't gunked up, but I can see how it would be if I continued to do more, although I do have to say that the results are about as clean as any I have ever seen the end of paracord.

Yeah, I'm not sure that it will be that useful for much else to be honest.
