Wear and tear on 93mm back spring.
on: July 27, 2023, 02:22:39 AM
I tore open my PX for a mod, part of what put me over the edge was a very unpleasant bump in the motion of the awl. I though the culprit was the tool, but when it was open all the damage was on the spring.

Do you guys wager this was a heat treatment issue? The PX was peened too tight, could that have done it?

The fix was flipping the spring around so the tools ride at slightly different angles but don’t touch the damaged area anymore.

One comment.  One question.
The steel is heat treated to make it a spring.  The spring works, so it was hardened.  The drag marks on the second photo show where the blade tang made some minor wear.  Normal stuff.  Not deep.  A little grit or something could cause that.  All knives pick it up.  The dimple is something else other than wear seems to me.  The first photo shows lighter drag marks made as the tool is opened.  Just a uniform dimple somewhat off center.
Question part.  Does the Pioneer X have a bump on the screwdriver/caplifter that 'locks' into the back spring like the new SAKs have?  Old SAKs didn't but the newer  ones have a very strong snap when that tool is opened.  Requires a very strong push to close.  By design of course.  The one dimple is very off center.  They both would seem to me to have been there since manufacture.
Best wishes. G

 :iagree:  All great points Gary.

I don't see how this could have been a heat treat issue if the knife had normal walk-and-talk, or snap.

Yeah good thoughts all, thanks for the input. On second thought it makes total sense that it was a defect that was not caught prior to assembly.

The 93mm cap lifter is like the older 91mm version, no bump. I think it would be neat if it did, that seems like a good feature to have.

Hi Big E,
The good part is you got it repaired and reassembled.  Congratulations.  Do we get to see a photo?  Best wishes. Gary

Of course! Here she is. Between this and my pioneer I have been quite happy at the moment for summer carries.

If you look closely one oddity was that the middle pin kind of split on the edges as I repeened. The larger ones went so great, so I am not sure if its a slightly different metal or just a side effect of my technique and diameter.

I think the spit comes from having too much material.

Made that combo about five years ago in 91mm and three years ago in 93mm. Hands down my most carried and used.
Really want it in 84mm alox now.

Yes seeing yours definitely got me considering it more.
That is a good insight about the splits, I will watch my material more closely on the next one.

I wish there was someone who would make 84mm scissors, because I would love to build an 84mm version too.

First few 93mm mods I did were just cut the pin and peen.
Now I cut the pin, tape up the SAK and file the pin down(especially the middle one) then peen.
Quick, clean and works well.

Years ago I traded away a 84mm scissor, then mrynnr gave me an alox cadet...
If I had a drill press then I would have attempted it already.
