Canada and Leatherman?
on: March 12, 2014, 04:13:31 PM
Not sure what is going on but I am having major issues buying Leathermans now up here in Canada. I mean, there was a time when I could look online and if a US retailer shipped to Canada, I was good to go. Now, I am blocked 100% of the time. I was so concerned that I called one of my favorite US retailers and they told me that if they sold anything to me, they could lose their Leatherman dealership.

Ok that sounds all great however, who the hell is the Canadian distributor? I haven't been able to find it. Whenever I type to find a dealer in my city, its Sears Canada. You folks may recall that the last time I walked in there, Sears wasn't doing well at all. I sure didn't find any Leathermans. I did make it my point to search and locate. The mission was a failure.

Well I tried to buy something off of eBay once again and was told I couldn't buy it because of restrictions to Canada, even though the seller clearly stated he shipped internationally, even stating Canada as one of the countries. I sent him a PM but he hasn't replied yet.

This pissed me enough to call the home office of Leatherman. I talked to a female but didn't get anywhere as the supervisor wasn't in her office. I told them I would call back. The woman who fields warranty for Leatherman USA couldn't tell me anything. Talk about frustration. I know Canada is a small market, but come on, I feel like I have been let down by Leatherman here. Thankfully I have a few good folks who are willing to keep my collection up to date as much as possible, but the one thing I absolutely hate is asking for help in such matters. Doesn't mean I am not grateful, or especially thankful. I just don't see why I have to get a friend to get items I once was able to freely buy myself. It looks like I may have to ask more often in the future or give up collecting Leathermans all together. Way to go Leatherman!

So I have to wonder, what are these new restrictions? Who is the Canadian dealer? The person from Leatherman couldn't even tell me that. I had assumed we had this thing called free trade. What gives?

I'm not sure, but in the Toronto area it's easy to buy locally, although recently all LM prices shot up (and Spyderco too). :-\

I dont think we have a distributor, just retail places like Mec.  I rarely buy anything in canada due to prices though.

I noticed MEC prices are higher than before too.  60 bucks for a juice s2 there, and I paid 45 shipped on ebay last week.

So how and where do we get the special stuff that Leatherman makes then? Seeing that US retailers are not allowed to sell to us anymore?

I guess I will have to depend on the good will of a few US members here. I do hate the cash outlay they have to do and the use of their time though. Two big reasons why I don't like calling on people like that. sigh.

I don't see why Leatherman would care who a retailer sells too. They get there money anyways.

I know. which is why I attempted to contact someone in Oregon about this. On the plus side, I successfully contacted the eBay seller and he figures it might be due to eBays new distribution system where you have to pay more upfront for it to cross a border. Personally, I stay away from this system as I have found it nothing but thievery. I would rather pay my dues to the proper people.

Ok, made great contact with the supervisor. She was fantastic. I gave here my email and she will reply when she can with some information. Things like this just reaffirm that Leatherman is still a fantastic company.

Yes, I got the notion that Canada may be an unintended victim as Leatherman had reined in their dealers because they were shipping world wide. Most of those other places probably have a dealer network. I don't think we do however, and the person I was talking to sort of lumped both the US and Canada together. I hope her inquiries will loosen thing up for international trade between our two countries. Anything will make my life a bit easier, and those of my friends as well who are overly generous in getting me these hard to get items.

I'm sorry about this happening. Hopefully Leatherman will correct these issues as I'm sure they know they could sell a lot of multitools to Canada. With so much wilderness it seems like a perfect place to send their multitools.

Thanks for looking into this Chako :salute:.

I've been wondering the same thing recently. There are a few stores where I can get them locally, but the prices are terrible. The other (main) problem is that they take forever to get any stock in of anything remotely new.

I hate trying to find a seller that will ship here, it's like pulling teeth.

Please let us know when you hear back from Leatherman.

Try Le Baron Outdoor Products, they have a store in Ottawa. And you can also go to Sail Ottawa, but their prices are high. If you're going online, Amazon.ca has a selection of Spydercos.

Thanks, is it possible that the first one's selection is better than their catalogue? I don't see a paramilitary 2 or Manbug.

I live in Ottawa as well.

Most of my Spydercos are ordered from Warriors and Wonders with good results.

LeBaron can order you in the items from their catalog but tend to not have a very good selection in stock.

Never purchased any from Sail or Amazon as they tend to be pricier and limited in models/configurations.

If you're after a specific colour/blade config, then W&W would be the better bet.
