Gentleman's Sak?

What would be your nomination's for the best Gentleman's Sak be ???, you know the sort of think you'd wear to wedding's and baptisms :)

As much as I love my Farmer and despite the fact I think it's classy, (but then I come from the gutter so I think wearing socks is classy :D) it's to big to be considered (imo) a true gentleman's knife :(, and that pretty much goes for all the 85 - 120mm sak's too

So you need something small and svelte (so probably just the alox, models then) :)

So here's my shortlist...
Vic 84mm Alox Cadet and Alox Lumberjack, and the 74mm Director, would make a very fine example too as would the Wenger Patriot and the Vic equivelent, the Secretary:)

I wouldn't rule out the new Alox 58mm either though :)

So what would you put forward as your choice ???

OHT.... i never was much of one for being well dressed :D

Seriously though i don't see why a Soldier wouldn't be acceptable :)

Don't get me wrong, I see know reason why a member of the Soldier/Pioneer family wouldn't be acceptable. It's just that my definition of a gentlemans knife is one that you can drop in your pocket and is practically invisable in terms of weight and unsightly bulges :D

I have three SAKs that I consider gentleman's knives.

ribbed Cadet (84mm) (any Cadet will do)
Golfer w/long nail file (84mm)
Executive (74mm)

It would be difficult for me to select a favorite between the Golfer and the Cadet.  A slight advantage goes to the Golfer for the scissors, but I really like the traditional can opener/screwdriver of the Cadet.  The Cadet is also very slim.

Patriot and Secretary hardly seem like real SAKs to me, since they have just the one blade.

They do seem like low-end gentleman's pocket knives - i.e. smallish, elegantly simple, nicely-finished pen knives.

I consider them 'low-end' gentleman's knives because they aren't particularly fancy or expensive.  No mother-of-pearl, exotic wood, or jade scales.  No higly polished brass or titanium bolsters.  No damascus steel or etched blades.

Lumberjack and Cadet aren't really gentleman's knives, which should have only one blade.  Guess I've seen a few two blade knives marketed as gentleman's knives over the years, but not many.  Never saw any with canopeners and screwdrivers.

I don't think Mike was trying to get too technical about the definition of "Gentleman's knife".

Believe it or not, there are people who give serious consideration to this kind of thing - e.g. which knife to carry when wearing a tux, which knife to carry to a formal dinner party, which knife 'goes with' this suit or that suit.

I don't happen to be one of those people, but they do exist and there are gentleman's knives marketed to them.

Terry's right, I was just trying to figure out which Sak's came closest to approximating a gentleman's knife :)

BTW the Patriot and Secretary both have 2 blade's.

Ooops...

That shows up my less than encyclopedic knowledge of the Wenger and Vic model lineup.

Don't both companies make a model with just one blade?

Could have sworn I remember seeing Vic and Wenger single blade models...

To me anything 91mm or less, and 3 layers or less would do.

I'd wear my Farmer. It's thin enough for me. But IF the size bothered me I'd go with a Cadet.

For formal occasions, the Waiter. Never know when you'll need a corkscrew. I took a huntsman to a formal Christmas party last year. I carried an SI at my wedding last weekend. Used it to cut the crap my brother put on my truck off  :P I couldn't see out the back window.

I've seen some excellent choices that you couldn't go wrong with; the Alox Bantam, Cadet(copper if you can lay your hands on one),Secretary/Patriot, and the Director, maybe even scarcer than a copper Cadet though. You could also include the stainless skinned version of the Wenger Pocket Tool Chest.

Cadets

Victorinox does indeed produce many single bladed SAKs- most are called Solos (84mm Solo, ALOX Solo etc) but the more recent versions in 111mm are called Sentinels.

Nobody mentioned the Swiss Card.  Slide it in your pocket / wallet and forget it is there.  :twak:

I like the Seceraty, Patriot and the Cadet for the idea of the "gentleman knife". ;)
