The creepy crawly is a Huhu Beetle.

I also think the blade looks better.
It's smaller size makes it good for kids to learn with.
And while I like a wharncliffe I thought having a bit of belly would be more practical and user friendly for them.

I've held one of those SPEW knives and they are nice.  The mod you did looks great.  Well done.

I carried my GEC fixed blade today with a friend.  I like this knife ( fixed blade ) for all things kitchen prep.

"As food
The larvae of P. reticularis are edible to humans, with a long history of indigenous consumption, and their flavour has been described as like buttery chicken[12] or peanut butter.[13] There are different names in Māori for grubs at different stages of development, for example young larvae still actively feeding on timber are called tunga haere or tunga rakau, while full grown grubs which have ceased to feed and are preparing to pupate are called tataka and are the most prized (because there is no undigested wood pulp inside of them at this point). Huhu grubs may be consumed either raw or traditionally cooked in a hāngi, and are an especially rich source of fat in the New Zealand wilderness.[14] "

Yeah, they are pretty good. However most peeps can't handle eating them.
I grew up eating sago grubs which are similar so I don't mind that kind of kai.

:like: I’ve been looking for a fixed blade and have seen you post pics of this GEC a few times Aloha and keep thinking what a fine looking knife it is. Checked some reviews and seems to fit the bill

Anyway just ordered myself one while the US/Australia $ conversion rate isn’t too bad

I think you'll like it.  Its been a great knife in my kitchen and for other chores.  I struggled a bit on which size to get.  I'm liking the old timey look quite a lot.  The sheath did need a mod because the inside button was contacting the blade.  Gorilla tape to the rescue.  The thread I started about GEC fixed blades Comis and I discuss it.

Cant wait to hear what your thoughts are on it.

Aloha I read your thread with comis and although there’s some mixed feelings  you both seem to really like them overall.…the reviews I’ve watched on YouTube are also very positive

It really reminds me of, what I called at the time (1970’s), my first sheath knife, so there’s definitely a nostalgic angle to my purchase.

I’ve gone for the middle size with 3.5” cutting edge. Think that’s the sweet spot for me, comis pic of small and large was a big help in deciding.

It’s such a good looking knife I was powerless to resist

Up or down, it'll slice it all!  Scares me sometimes just to handle it, but I love a sharp knife!
