Not exactly what's in focus, but recycling a photo from earlier today is easier than taking a new one

That's an interesting looking knife. Are you supposed to put your finger through the large hole, or is that how it locks into the scabbard?

Yes, the hole serves as the index finger position. Like so many other Spydercos, appearance may not be everyone's cup of tea, but with some practice that hole makes the knife very practical in use. Not only does it allow a very secure hold on the knife from the moment you pull it from the sheath, but it also allows you to change your grip and hold on to the knife only by the hole, which let's me do small tasks like tying knots, rinse a gutted fish etc. without putting the knife away.
I'm a big fan of wharncliffes, but in some use cases it's a limiting factor, so I would love to see a version with some belly as well. Not too optimistic about that though.

Oh.. and the hole also serves as the retention for the sheath, but I assume that's more of a lucky coincidence than the primary driver for carving out such a massive hole in the blade.

Trying to decide what to carry next.  I've been carrying the ESEE Izula II for the last 2 or 3 weeks and I want to switch it out for the Buck 140 or the Brisa Crafter.  I rarely carry the Buck for more than a couple of days so I might go with the Brisa Crafter.

I have to say, the folks at Bark River really put some thought into what makes a good EDC fixed blade knife.  I wish it was more affordable.  Sherry, your two Essentials are different steels, aren't they?  Do you have a preference?

The blue one I specifically purchased for the MagnaCut steel.  The green is CPM-154, which is good enough quality steel as long as you maintain it.  However, Magnacut is known for for having better edge retention and better corrosion resistance which is good in a humid environment.

And now for something completely different.  :2tu:
The DPx H.E.S.T. and a Swiss Tool.  I've given it some thought and this is what I'd want with me on Alone, if I was ever to compete on that show.  They are both indestructible beasts, and I like the Swiss Tool better than the Surge that most competitors show up with.

Both are definitely beasts.  I’ve handled a HEST and was surprised by how beefy it was.

Just about the ideal EDC fixed blade: The AG Russell Bird and Trout. Great knife, and I am thrilled they brought it back into production. I have spent an embarassing amount on fixed blade knives and this little guy gets carried more than all the others put together. Please excuse the cluttered photo. I was playing around with different editing programs on my phone, haha!

:like: I looked at the AG Russel Bird and Trout several years ago and it was out of stock at the time, so I forgot about it.  I'm glad you were able to get one and it works for you.

I started the day with the White River M1 Backpacker on my belt but then the mail arrived and the Backpacker was used to open a package.  :mail:

Inside was the Bark River Necker that I purchased from Sherry (Sos24) by making a donation to help a friend of hers who went through a terrible tragedy.  There are plenty of other knives and tools still available on Sherry's list in the tools for sale forum if anyone else would like to help.  Anyway, the Bark River Necker is 6 and 1/4 inches of goodness in bright orange Kydex.  There's no clip on the scabbard so, for now, I will pocket carry it.  Thanks again, Sherry.

Cool knife! I only wish its sale hadn't been brought on by such bad circumstances.

The slot milled in the top of the blade of the Bark River is the same color as the weathered wood.  Does that mean it goes all the way through, or does it just happen to be the same shade?  Best wishes.  G

The color just happens to be similar.  It does not go all the way through the blade on that model.

Cheers Mags.  I think there have been at least 3 manufacturers of the DPX H.E.S.T. knife.  ESEE, Ontario, and Lionsteel.  Mine is by Lionsteel, the last ones to build this knife.  Not an endorsement, although I do like Lionsteel, it's just what turned up at a reasonable price on ebay.  I'd wanted one for a long time and would have been happy with any of them.

It's a lovely robust, business like knife isn't it?

I have an ESEE Izula II, which is perfectly adequate, but the HEST is the dogs smurf

The HEST is a favorite, but it doesn't get carried much because of the pry tip on the handle and the necessity to use the full flap sheath.  It is a full inch longer than the Izula II, but the handle is amazingly comfortable.  I keep saying this, but one of these days I will grind down that ridiculously sharp pry tip that nobody has ever really used, because it ripped one shirt and one couch cushion while the knife was sheathed on my belt, causing a domestic disturbance.  :twak: Then I'll be able to carry the knife in a proper Loveless style sheath instead of the full flap sheath it is relegated to now, to prevent such damage.
