Just give me one of your spares…
on: April 06, 2025, 10:37:42 AM
In the last few years I’ve given my wife a few Leathermans.

She’s got a Charge TTi, one of the last batches of Juices, a limited edition Orchid Raptor Rescue, and a blue Raptor Response.

Problem is, she loses things… sometimes she has three Leatherman tools in her bag at once, sometimes she’ll misplace them for months.

As they’re all either discontinued or hard/expensive to replace, I’d like to get her something else, a nice all-rounder to leave in the car and occasionally carry in her bag.

Her solution? “Just give me one of your duplicates “

My duplicates:

So now I have to buy another Leatherman.

Yes I know this is supposed to be funny...

If the "misplaced" MTs always turn up eventually then the situation isn't so bad (but I'd buy some more common duplicates for her for future replacements).  If they are actually lost forever then IMO it is your fault for continually enabling her bad behaviour by replacing MTs for her when you should make her buy her own ("actions have consequences").

Nothing has been lost for ever, but it seems more sensible for her to have something a bit easier to replace.

The tools pictured are the only ones where I have identical duplicates - two Mr Crunch, two MiniTools, two Free P4s, and four Crunches.

I’m thinking of a Bond, Rebar, or knifeless Rebar for her. A Bond II would be just about perfect. A Bond with scissors. Coming soon, Leatherman?

I feel you pain...my wife is a little better, but when I get a new toy, it's 'oh that's nice, I could do with that...' or 'i'll just borrow this.....' never to be seen again!!!

Maybe hide your good stuff, and give her a Wingman or a Wave+.   :tu:

My wife could care less about my knives.
She's got her scissors and kitchen knives

Hey two bonds. Now you have a duplicated bond

My wife seldom touch my tools. And most of the time she doesn't care cos I'm the one to "do it". When she really need to do it herself, she will just ask me to hand over one.

And Bond and PST look the same to her.

I'm lucky my wife is pretty good with whatever SAK, knives, or multitools I've given her.  She hasn't lost one yet.  Of course is helps that most of them are purple and purple is her favorite color.  Kind of hard to miss if you leave them out and she pays more attention because, it's her favorite color.
May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Mrs. FX never lost her Micra or any of her Classic SDs. I, on the other hand, cannot say I've never lost a knife. Maybe put a brightly colored lanyard on Mrs. Crunchie's multis to make them more visible?

The problem is she moves them about between bags, coats, and in and out of the car, and completely loses track of what tool is in which pocket or bag.

Apart from the Orchid Raptor, which matches her company’s colours perfectly, the only Leatherman she’s really commented on appearance-wise is the Garage 5.

My wife doesn't really lose stuff, she misplaces it for years.  I put some colored scales on SAKs for her, but she kept them where she would never lose or use them.  She loved carrying Classics when she worked but permanently lost several, so I bought a batch of 20 used ones on eBay.  Even now and then she would ask, "Do you have another of those cute little knives?"

LOL.  I have a pile of Classics to this day for similar reasons.  Honestly I've 'lost' more than my wife, due to being on my keychain when I travel.  The pile I bought were TSA reclaims, I'm just doing my part.    Great little knife.

I've outfitted my wife and daughter both with EDC materials.  They both have flashlights on their keychains, a Classic as well.  In their cars they both have a Leatherman Wingman.  My wife has a Leatherman Skeletool as well as another, slightly larger flashlight in her car in a small kit.  By daughter has Leatherman Juice XE6 as well.

The family that EDC togethers, well, I don't know, but we're somewhat prepared.

New Leatherman incoming!

A green Bond just arrived for her to keep in the car and use as her main tool.

Ordered on the last day of the recent promotion, so it came with a free removable bit driver, one the most useful add ons, in my opinion.

I don’t dislike the colours, but I’d prefer it if both handles were the same.
