Thanks breezy12 for the advise, would any pliers fit, i.e. rebar Supertool

no problem -- always happy to help!

the ST300 plier head will not fit in a Charge. use a Rebar if you want to do the plier head swap.

are you mainly after the outside accessible scissors, or do you really want the Skinny Charge? if the outside scissors (with the rest of the tool loadout intact) is what you're after, check out the Mini Surge that I did for Kampfer. (that mod could just as easily be done with a Charge instead of a Wave.)

if you want more info about the Skinny Charge, let me know... I've gotten enough questions about it that it's probably worth posting a build thread for it at this point. :)

this "skinny Charge" has been a terrific office EDC for me the past few months. :tu:

this Wave was a restoration project

Hey there breezy12, a question if I could, I'm in the middle of figuring out some hacks on my wave, I'm wanting to add the rigid Phillips screwdriver like in your pic, did you bend down the flap, stop, nub thing that the pliers hit when closed? Or any pointers I can snag from ya?

I think you need to remove the piece sheet metal that locks blade when handles are open, in order for the tool close completely

I'd owned at least one leatherman since I was in high school, and I never thought to take em apart till I stumbled across y'all. I wish I would have kept em all now, I could've used the pieces.

Just S2 inspired by Metro's "Slimjim".

Tapped for a pocket clip, I just need to finish modding the clip I have for it.

Ha! I just removed the paper thin scales and useless can opener. Maybe Gerber copied Leatherman?

Thanks for the Welcomes!

The gene pool:

The first patient on the operating table:

First op done:

Rebar with Wave scissors, using the Wave pivot as it's easier to put back together. I need to carry on swapping layers to get the tool load right - I've left in the serrated blade but taken out the can opener but that will change.

Hardest part was talking the Rebar apart. A bit fiddly getting the tools back in but holding the handle of the multi in my vice helped to steady things. Could do with a second security torx bit, though the wingman screws work OK.

The Irwin pliers are lovely - I've got a pair of side cutters with the same handles too - got a good deal on a set from my local tool shop.

Better:

Swapped the large flat driver for one from a Wingman as it's slightly thinner and fitted better, shuffled the tools around, replaced one of the pivots with one from a Kick so I can use a pocket clip and screwed it all back together.

Need to make the locking groove on the Wingman flat driver deeper so it locks better and grind some of the tab by the nail nick off to get it flush with the other tools.  I also need to swap the position of the can opener and large flat driver as at the moment the can opener pokes through the slots in the handle when you close it up.

Wanted to add the Wingman pocket clip - needed to use the Wingman pivots for the hex for the clip to fit over.  But they're different sizes - the Wingman plier pivots are smaller than the Rebar.  So I made a brass bush from some 0.4mm sheet to line the Rebar pliers hole:

The holes in the handles are too big so there's a bit of play in the handles - I'm going to make some new pivots from 1/4" brass hex bar when I get a chance.  Means I can put metric fasteners in instead of the imperial ones in there at the momenet.

Had to cut a hole in the handle for the tip of the anti-rotation lug to fit into, but it's lovely and secure now.

Ground a bit more off the Wingman flat driver too, so it clears the lock tab spring better.

wow, really nicely done, hiraethus! :o

just yesterday I was eyeballing the Wingman pocket clip to see if I could get it to fit on a Rebar, but I gave up much sooner than you did, apparently. :D I really like the way that clip sits on there. :tu:

Thanks. I wasn't sure how far I was going to have to go to make this work, but having realised I'd dismantled 4 perfectly functioning multi tools for parts I thought 'smurf it, let's see where this takes me'.  :D

That is looking real nice.  :tu:  Do you have a pic of the hole you cut?

I'll take one tomorrow for you. I had to mod the clip too so I'll try to get a shot of that as well.

Clipped to my pocket:

Closeups of the installed clip:

I used a couple of spacers from the Wingman as the pivot is longer than it needed to be.  I'll make the new one shorter to suit.

The hole is a bit ragged as I kept slipping with the tiny diamond burrs on my dremel on the angled face I was cutting into - needs more work with the diamond files.

This means I'll have to drill out the Wingman pliers to get them into the Rebar handles.  :(

Or, if you've access to a lathe, turn some stepped collars to locate the smaller diameter pivots in the large holes in the handles.
