I have a wave+, and love it.  Three questions.

1. Is there a way to make holding it more comfortable?  If I'm carving something for more than a few minutes the edges dig into my hand and make it uncomfortable to use.  Is there a workaround for this?
2. Is there a way to make the blade lock stronger? After a year of (ab)use my main blade has a bit of a wobble in it now.
3. Is there a good way to carry one extra bit?  I have a glass breaker bit from a skeletool XR coming, and I'm trying to figure out how to carry it.

THanks!

(So far I reground the main blade, added tweezers, and magnetized the tiny screwdriver for an improvised compass.)

First off, welcome to  :MTO:

To answer your questions

1 If you wrap it with leather while in use wpuld be one way to make it more comfortable in use but that might not be to portable or to convenient  :dunno:

2 not aure anyone has done anything to make the lock stronger or hold better  if it is to bad then you might have to send it in for warranty  but it may not be bad enough for warranty work :dunno:

3 we have had a member or 2 that have 3D printer bit holders and used adhesives and/or epoxy to attach them to the frame of the Wave :salute:

You might also go to the Mod Squad sub forum and search around for things you can do to your Wave :salute: Good luck with whatever you end up doing :tu:and also if you do, do anything, we like pics :pok: :D

I'm sure putting Rebar awls in Waves is old hat by now, but I've been meaning to do this for quite awhile. I replaced the flat driver, which I don't ever use.

(Image removed from quote.)

Zoomed in, and with the sharpness and levels turned up to 11, you can see the washer I added to keep the awl from scraping along the side.

(Image removed from quote.)

If the nylon washer ever gives up, I can always replace it with something else. It's what I had that fit.
I might not regularly carry the Wave, but I still fiddle with it from time to time.

Scalpel and awl! With the bronzed stainless steel on that #4 scalpel holder, my Wave is looking a bit steampunk these days.

Well folks, after much research, waiting, and money down the drain here is my first modded Leatherman! I call it the KickStart. I love the frame size of the leatherman Kick, but was not a fan of the toolset. Thanks in a large part to this forum I now have a tool that is about 95% the perfect tool for me. On the agenda for this tool in the future:

1. Tap for a Free series pocket clip as the Kick clips are unobtanium.

2. Find someway to put a diamond file in place of the eyeglass screwdriver. The space between the head and the handle is enough for the Kick knife but the Blast and Wave file I have tried are both too thick due to the way the file teeth potrude outwards. An Idea I am currently toying with is to buy one of these "credit card" diamond knife sharpeners I see on Amazon and attempt to grind it to fit. That is quite a ways down the road though.

Anyhow, enjoy the eye candy!

Thanks Poncho! I wasn't sure how to put a pic in, as I wanted it at a higher resolution so I didn't want to use the attachments portion. I had a lot of fun putting the pic together, I figured I'm probably not going to use these parts in another tool, might as well use em in a photo! Another thing I'm looking to get done is to have my name, contact info, and the Multitool.org logo laser engraved on it.

No problem  :hatsoff:

If you aren't going to use the pieces that are left over what are you going to do with them? :ahhh :ahhh I might could use them  :D

Also, that sounds cool to have stuff lasered on it :o :like: :like:

I have no clue what I will do with the spare parts, I can’t imagine I will ever use them in future mods so I might be interested in offloading some of them . I think I’ll keep them for a little bit as I want to put a “how to mod Leathermans” article on Ifixit. After I finish taking the photos for that I’d be interested in selling some parts. Funny story, I actually took apart a black & silver Wave+ for this project as that was the cheapest Wave+ I had seen on eBay in a while that had the BO tools I needed.

Re: Wave+ questions
Reply #2861 on: August 17, 2021, 07:52:36 PM
I have a wave+, and love it.  Three questions.

1. Is there a way to make holding it more comfortable?  If I'm carving something for more than a few minutes the edges dig into my hand and make it uncomfortable to use.  Is there a workaround for this?
2. Is there a way to make the blade lock stronger? After a year of (ab)use my main blade has a bit of a wobble in it now.
3. Is there a good way to carry one extra bit?  I have a glass breaker bit from a skeletool XR coming, and I'm trying to figure out how to carry it.

I found a partial solution for problem 1, holding it hurts my hand.  The problem comes down to two parts.  First, the serrated blade sticks up a lot vs. the rest of the case.  When I use the straight blade that stabs into my palm and hurts.  My fix for this is a small 3D printed scale that's held on with CA glue. (Picture attached.)   It still fits in the OE Wave+ sheath with this modification

The second, smaller, pain point was where my fingers wrap around the other side of the handle.  The edge of the blade guard hurt.  For this, tapping it with a hammer to bend the case together a small amount made a huge difference.  I measured it before and after and the change was only like 0.2mm, but the improvement is huge.

Future work:  I still want a way to carry that Skeletool XR bit with me, and I have a possible solution now.  If I make the backside scale a little thicker I can leave a hollow in it to hold the bit.  That's a future project.  Also I wish I hadn't printed it in blue. :/

Good job.  :tu:

I seem to recall someone else making something similar that held bits.....

EDIT: This may be what I was thinking of: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,73762.msg1564765.html#msg1564765
I'm sure someone made one that holds a bit though.  :dunno:

Hey all,

Long time no post...

Surprise gift packing duties on a city trip to Amsterdam required forthwith deployment of the ST300VX' scissors  :multi:

Edit: not that I'm carrying it around here - the local law frowns upon carrying lockable blades. It's stashed in the travel toolkit for just this kind of contingencies 😉

This one?

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,72408.msg1495196.html#msg1495196

No, I was initially thinking it was on something like an ST300 by Dutch_Tooler or metroplicity BUT it was that mod you did that made me realize that it must have been the MUT's bit holder that I was imagining, not a mod.
If that makes sense.

Thanks - I'm not very active these days but keep lurking  8)

On the bit holders in scales, giving some serious thought, that would not be easy, there isn't a lot of space with the ST300 in pliers mode. Unless... something with space in the width direction? 3D printed to clamp around the handle(s)?

Very slick Poncho! I’ve been thinking of making a Wave knife but I need some extra pivots. I sacrificed them to my KickStart lol. It’s actually really nice now, I used the Wave’s anti rotation washers so my KickStart no longer has the tool sticking issue of other Kicks.
