Latest update for my Leatherman Signal..... gonna convert the bit driver to a 4mm precision bit driver and have re-designed the pliers in CAD so I can have both made in Titanium ... should hopefully knock another ounce or so off the weight .... and its titanium mwahahahahaha :-) 8) :D 8) :D

Took a full day to do the CAD. And the tab on the hex tool is a blatant rip-off of a Playge bead. Sorry. Tool bits will be held in place with a bonded in magnet.

Latest updates....... titanium plier head ..... uses chopped down pivot from knife and saw. and I replaced the chopped down hammer head with an ABS rapid prototype (fits like a glove) which also uses the locking pin (replaced with threaded tube and 2 screws to retain a titanium lanyard hoop. All in all, weight is down to 160 grams from 212. Aiming for another 10 grams if possible.

next jobs are to

1. redesign awl
2. re-design can opener as a bottle opener and possibly box cutter in titanium .... almost done.
3. Still waiting for titanium bit holder I sent to be rapid prototyped....... 1st model wasn't feasible.

You might re-consider when you see how much titanium rapid prototypes cost...... I got mine printed at I-materialise. I've attached the stl file of the CAD if you want to make some yourself. If you have them made, you'll still need to make a pivot, find two .005" inch phosphor bronze washers (I use 1x .005 and 1x .010)...... ,and a belt sander to polish the edges. I had to slightly re-tension the fork spring to work with these (the spring in one side of the handle that expands to lock the main blade to prevent opening when using the pliers). Stiffness isn't bad but not as stiff as the original steel ones which means slightly more sideways play.

Ammendment .... wont let me post with STL attachment ..... if you want the STL file, let me know how to get it to you.

Managed some more updates to my Leatherman Signal....

1. Had to re-make the tweezer/toothpick holder since my Titanium plier head design allows the handle to close more than original when using..... so the diamond file crushed it when I squeezed the pliers.
2. Redesigned titanium bit holder arrived.... needed a fair bit of filing to get to work as intended but now holds both leatherman bits and 4mm precision screwdriver bits using the same carry-over spring mech from a donor bit holder. Still haven't tested yet for strength..... so not getting rid of original bit holder in a hurry!
3. Removed can opener and designed a new tool in Grade 5 titanium ...... a bottle-opener/box cutter. it has a reverse mounted bottle opener on the back of the blade (came up with this idea wen doing my last SAK mod) and the box cutter has a false edge on the back to allow it to fit better with pliers when folded. Grade 5 titanium is ABSOLUTE pig to work with but at least it saves weight!. Took about 3 hours for me to fabricate a new lanyard hoop.... why is it that sod's law waits till you're just about done before you drop the sodding thing and then spend another 1/2 hour trying to find it, whishing you'd made the workshop just a little tidier!!!!
4. made bottle opener on new box cutter redundant after redesigning lanyard loop to include bottle opener ..... much better than box cutter since I now don't have to pfaff with opening tool just to take the lid off a bottle :-) .. unfortunately it means i have to re-design the box cutter. it slots into the ABS rapid prototype I made to replace the hammer and uses a pin to secure. very pleased with this..... its almost too simple :-)

Next job is to re-design box cutter again and awl, so some pondering to be had to come up with two tools that work well together in that space..... again in titanium.

Now down to 156 grams (or 151g without the lanyard bead)....... would be awesome to get this under 142g (weight of a standard skeletool).

Thanks for the compliments :-)

Looks like I'm getting properly stricken by the modding bug...... just ordered a SOG Powerpint to see what I can do there...... #totalgadgetgeek!!!!!!

Definitely want to put in an exterior bottle opener and lanyard hoop, like the leatherman, This will leave a void in the bladed area for storage ... precision bits, tweezers, toothpick etc. Also means I can re-visit the Signal to make it into more of a home/workplace tool since it has that locking blade making it illegal for EDC carry in the UK and remove the tweezers/toothpick holder in favor of bit holders etc..

Also see how far i can get the weight down .... wonder if I can get it under 80g?

Recon a bladeless EDC, with a precision bit holder (4mm) and 6 double ended bits would be nice.
See what's available for upgrading the scissors.
Would be awesome to redesign the plier head in titanium, with replaceable carbide cutters but that might be a bit of a tall order!

Picked up this PST II pretty cheap due to the broken tools, jammed scissors and need of a proper clean

Swapped out the broken file for a SOG saw (kindly supplied by gregozedobe) and turned the broken small screwdriver into an awl

Placed the broken file on top of the saw and marked up what needed removing with a sharpie, then used a rotary tool for that and shaping the awl

Gave it a good clean and oil and all now working great

This is my all time favorite and most carried mod :woohoo:

My Charge knife :tu: for those that haven't seen it or don't know alot about it, it is half a Charge handle with PE blade, diamond file,  scissors and large bit driver (I have a long Phillips/flat bit in it) :woohoo: plus it has the quick release pocket clip 8)

I did a quick mod to my Blast today. I replaced the eyeglasses bit driver with a cut-down Surge/ST300 awl. I had originally ordered this awl with the intention of modding my Wave, but it proved to be too long and thick to easily replace the Wave's eyeglasses driver, even after I did a rather messy job of grinding it shorter and thinner. I also had to reshape the pivot in order for the awl to engage with the Wave's lock. Ultimately, I wasn't able to fit it in my Wave to my satisfaction, and it has been sitting in a drawer since then.

But, now my Blast has an awl!

The awl is not perfect; the ground-down retrieval tab is basically impossible to reach because it's recessed compared to the other tools. I have to use the locking notch to pull the awl open instead.

Thank you! I'm almost satisfied with it myself! I like the Surge/ST300 awl because it has that groove on it that makes it more effective for drilling and reaming. I wish the awl on the Rebar/Bond/Curl had that groove.

So I think I want to start my first modification. Rebar awl into a charge to replace the small eyeglass screwdriver. Any tips? What's the best tools for opening the rebar?

Thanks for your help.
