isolation length cutter?
on: April 21, 2014, 06:51:18 AM
Has anyone figured out what the "Isolation Length Cutter" is actually used for on the spirit? I searched here a little bit and a quick google search showed nothing. Just curious, it seems super useful for general scraping-type jobs, but I'm rather unsure of what it's intended purpose would be.

If its what I think you are taking about, it is for stripping wire. Or are you talking about another tool?

I think so Nate, I have seen it advertised as 'wire insulation length cutter', but always called these wire strippers too. Early Soldiers have them on the caplifter, and Electricians have them near the tang of the electrician blade.  I usually use it for scraping stuff from rounded surfaces. :salute:

Works for cleaning screw/bolt threads too... :)

We are taking about the same tool then. We always called them a wire stripper.
Cool idea on the thread cleaner. Never thought of that. I always used the tip of the file or the awl.

Used to (mis)use the small blade.

The sharpened edge of the can opener works too, and with less damage. :)

No no gentlemen. In the diagram of the tool load on the spirit, the chisel has the blade come down 90 degrees for about 1mm or so. The arrow pointing to the extra 1mm of blade after the 90degrees says 'isolation length cutter'. The swisstool doesn't have the extra section of blade, just the chisel tip, and, thus, no 'isolation length cutter'.

Remember, young Jedi, the power of this tool should only be used for good.  :salute:

It's for cutting the insulation lengthwise isn't it? On the Victorinox website they have a tool listed as "cable cover cutter lengthwise". That seems to say the same thing to me.

that´s what it´s meant to do. Never do that with the serrated edge of your MP 600, btw... It bleeds quite much when you slip. :ahhh

Top to bottom: Master Electrician, '84 Soldier, Spirit. Essentially the same tool/idea.

Yes, whatever you call it, the original SwissTool doesn't have it, only a chisel type tool without the additional sharpened edge.

OK, my mistake, the original SwissTool does have a sharpened side edge on the chisel tool, just a much smaller version, and a v-notch as well, similar to the Spirit. If I had one, I would have known. Is my collection complete without the SwissTool?
