I'm in complete agreement with you on why they are putting out these I agree it's needed. But as a person who has enough higher quality tools already I don't see myself getting one of these. ;)

It might be a good entry drug to the future multitool enthusiasts. I'm sure we have a few members here already who got here after they got a Wingman or Sidekick and went exploring after that.

<=this guy was hooked by a $20 wingman last year.

Then bought a $30 sidekick, then a $80 wave...

I don't see myself spending $80 on my first MT

.....
I suppose what I'm saying is that the loyal fans should applaud them for bringing out the range of cheapo naff OPMTs and the cheapo naff Wingman/Sidekick/Rev tools that we have seen of late .... they're keeping the company alive so they can also keep bringing you the tools that folks here DO want to see.
.....

Very well said 50' - And of course to combat the cheap Chinese/Asian lookalikes.
I have not got a Wingman or Sidekick - But my brother has one, and it seems half decent for light everyday use. I honestly believe LM would not bring something out that was totally rubbish. They just have different tools for different user groups.

And the price point is very well made.
I remember when I got my first Leatherman - I could not believe how expensive it was - About £80. At the time I had also bought one of those all in one tool sets in a plastic case, with about 15 tools (hammer, four screwdrivers, file, utility knife, socket set, measuring tape etc etc), to keep in the car, for about £15. And sure after a year or so the tools rusted slightly - But they did the job very well, and are stillgoing strong!
It did make me think - "Is this LM really worth it?" !!!

So hitting a price point for the masses is very important.
There have been many examples in history of companies bringing out a superb quality, functional product, but at totally the wrong price point (even if it is justified), and the product just died.

If it means soemone has a handy MT at home, in the car, or their bag - Great!!
And also much less painful if it is lost or stolen!!
And of course for the enthusiast, stickler for quality, heavy duty user - There is always the more expensive tools.

Like its been said, you don't get a second chance to make a first impression.
I think the wingman is as low end as lm should go. 30$ is quite substantial if THe average shopper is just needing an extra tool, gift, or last minute camping gear type situation. Not really looking for an heirloom, but something that will suffice. And a wingman\sidekick is good for that, But does lm want to just get known for tools that are almost good?

I'm curious to take a look at it. In a store. And probably not buy.

But I agree with the theory that Leatherman is trying to compete with the Sheffields and SwissTech and Gerber with very entry level tools, and for people who want better, they buy Leatherman again. But I also think they are trying to compete with their own product with this one, the Skeletool.

Like I said last year with the Pirahna, when you are knocking off your own products, what does that say?

And at the end of the day, the Sidekick(I can't speak for the Wingman) is absolutely in no way shape or form, a bad tool. This is especially true when they could be had for 19 bucks. Sure I have gripes about it, things I wish were done differently or finished better, but I mean that's most of the reason we're even on this site. We put way more thought into it than 85% of the users, but this tool has done nothing but work. It has never failed to complete any task I used it for, though I do not use my tools as hard as some of you guys do.

Despite the lowered fit and finish, the raw quality does not seem to have taken a hit as they go after the lower price points. I won't attempt to say they are as good as the pricier offerings, but I do believe them to be head and shoulders above the contenders they face in their class. So if this tool comes out and is available for prices like the ones the Sidekick and Wingman could have been had for, I'll be hard pressed to pass one up. Reliable, quality tools with a good warranty program for under 20 bucks? I'm there all day.

Getting closer to resolving this mystery...I copied the LM Rev website link to someone on the 'inside' I happened to exchange few messages with in the past and yes...the LM Rev is real, it's a new budget tool, it will be officially announced in January and no..it shouldn't have been listed on that web site yet. No more info, and I didn't ask any further.

Hope this clears the confusion a bit.

So pre-announced at $40, available January.  Rebar currently $48.  I know what MT I won't be gifting this Festive Season

On a technical note, still a locking blade, not legal EDC in many jurisdictions.  A missed opportunity for a world legal like Lansky   I'd have put scissors on the outside and the small Sidekick blade inside in place of the package opener.

For places that allow locking but not OHO blades like Germany (either OHO or locking) or Denmark probably. This opens up a 100 million people market for them.

If that thing comes out with bypass cutters and spring-less pliers like it shows in the pic, I would definitely carry it over the Wingman and Sidekick any day.

What's driving me mad is that Gander Mountain still has it on backorder.  Plus, nothing about the REV on Amazon
