Victorinox 93mm Liner material
on: April 29, 2014, 07:47:08 AM
Dear MTO-Community!

Following question preys on my mind:
Which material are the liners of (actual) 93mm-Alox knives made of?
(see picture)

Can anybody verify that they are made of aluminium?

Best regards

Chris

Hi, Chris.

According to this thread, it does seem like the separator is made of Al or some kind of aluminium alloy:

Nickel silver is 3x the density of aluminium - weigh it, see if you can work out the volume and you should be able to tell what it's made of.

I had read in various places that the 91mm were aluminum alloy and the 93mm were orig brass and then sometime after '99, nickle silver (as in the '61 Soldier). I do know one thing, a neglected 91mm can "weld" itself shut over time but no matter how stuck/neglected the 93's are (brass or nickle silver)...they can be restored to operation.

Have had several uncleaned TSA 91mm knives that were either "welded" upon arrival  and one Champion actually welded shut while waiting to be cleaned in my box, It was fine when I bought it (needed only minor cleaning, all blades moved freely) but It sat about a  year in my storage box and now, every blade is frozen in place. Even resorted to trying WD-40 penetrating oil but no luck.

I dont know about over all the years, but currently alox liners are nickel silver (german silver) and 91mm liners are cheap aluminum.  It feels like 2000 or 3000 series to me as its very soft.  For sure not a higher grade like 6061.

Thank you all for your quick responses  :tu:
OK, the material is nickel silver - then I have to check for check for alternatives for anodizing.

Best regards

Chris
