Just got a new Mp600 in black and was surprised to see they add the black oxide finish to the serrated blade after the edge has been ground. Never seen this before on a blade

That was my thought exactly but, at least in my examples, all three of mine were quite sharp; not affected by the oxidation process!

I’d always assumed the blades were sharpened  after the knife was assembled  to reduce the risk of injuring the assembler.  Definitely not the first time I’ve been wrong

Just wanted to show off my “Gerber MP600 Drive”. I much prefer the MP600ST as the main tool due to the frame already having cutouts, longer combo knife blade than other mp600 variants, longer Phillips driver, replaceable cutter inserts (I know the carbide ones are junk), and better plastic tool locks on this model similar to the diesel.

Mods:
1. Removed AR sight tool and added gerber armbar slim bit driver. Driver tool and MP600 frame both had to be modded a good bit to allow fitment. NOTE: attempted to modify the AR sight tool initially to accept a bit extension but this is not recommended as it is easier and cleaner to just add the bit driver from the armbar, and also allows for another short tool to be added in the stack due to the armbar driver having a slimmer profile.
2. Added scissors, Tshank adapter (for leatherman surge file, Tshank saw blades, etc), and large flathead with V notch.
3. HSS cutter inserts installed and are much much better. I have cut wire hangers, barbed wire, etc with them and not even the slightest damage.
4. EPI insta-black 370SS sample kit on the way to blacken the modified portion of the frame, bit driver, and satin tools.
Also may add Wire Stripper tool from SOG powerlock in near future as I’ve already done this mod to my other MP600 I have.

Well I just joined!  I couldn't believe how much they were going for on the factory site so I jumped in the Bay.  I found a black oxide model for a reasonable price.  How I managed to get out of the US Army without one is beyond me!     Pics to follow.

Very nice , I see it’s an older model as it is stamped USA with the older logo but has the replaceable wire cutters so it’s a later old model.
I’m sitting here appreciating the awesomeness of the Strongarm fixed blade which is also accompanied by one of my MP600’s

Thanks Dunc!  It has a broken can opener but that's not a big deal.  It has virtually no wear on it.  It was right to open the tools, so I gave it a good cleaning and some oil and it works well.  I was wondering how to date it.  The replaceable cutters made me think it was a later model.  I knew someone that picked up one of these in the Army and never carried anything else.   Nice looking Strongarm by the way :tu:

Hi Barry , does it have a code later etched on one side of the handle ?

IMG_8639 by Duncan Moore, on Flickr

Or a number stamped on the inside of one of the handles ?

This isn't the best picture, but this is the only numbers on it that I can find.

That’s a fairly early one mate , must be one of the first to have replaceable cutters

Thanks Dunc!  It hardly shows any wear on it.  I'm guessing it's a TSA seizure but who knows?  :dunno:

Congrats, Barry, nice score!!! It looks like the previous owner switched pliers head; still, a great tool!  :woohoo: :tu:
And to the best of my knowledge, those chassis/handles do not have date codes.

Thanks Juan!  It's a fun carry.  I forgot just how well built they are.  I've been playing catch up on the Gerber section and seen some ier head swaps.  It doesn't look too difficult to do.  I ordered a sheath from Gerber for it, which should make it easier to carry.  I've been using my Center Drive sheath but I'm not a huge fan of the Velcro latch on it.

They're super strong and hard to fail; and although a 20+ years design, still as rugged as when it came out. My only gripe is the d/c of the blunt nose pliers head with integral cutters; they should've left it as a 2nd type of "Basic" model! You know you can place a warranty claim on that opener? Or, you can replace with any small tool from another MP, DIESEL, or Suspension/NXT. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mines! :tu:

Oooh, I also run two of my MP's in CD sheaths: one in nylon and the other in the leather one!

I know exactly what you mean!  Up until recently, I never thought I'd want a pair of blunt nose pliers but now I understand completely how handy they are.  They're on my new list of Gerber MP600's to get.  I'd love to have a blunt nose Center Drive!
I ordered the leather sheath from Gerber.  I figured I could use it for both.
I'm more than likely going to send mine in for the can opener, although I've never modded anything and a saw would be so nice!
When did they switch to a Wharncliffe blade?  Mine has one and I was surprised.

I've definitely got the 600 bug.  A blunt nose looks so handy.  I just got my Gerber leather sheath.  It works like a charm!

After looking at some of the older posts here, I think the previous owner converted the can opener to an awl.  I'll say this it's definitely sharp!
